I find eneloop to be best, but I have a load of batteries and if I used regular NiMH time between charging would be too bad, so if you plan on recharging all your batteries every week or so go with regular NiMH of high mAh, have a look here for reviews, http://www.users.on.net/~mhains/
also, i wonder if anyone can recommend a usb recharger? haven't researched it yet, but surely there is such a thing right? I find that USB chargers are not that great, and would recommend the 'rezap battery doctor' as a main charger, it is a bit large though...

PowerEx from www.thomasdistributing.com (URL is about right). If you want fast recharge get a CP-E4.

You should be careful claiming to speak for such a diverse range of people.

Sanyo Eneloops are excellent in this application, especially if you're not a daily flash user. Their high charge shelf life is great, and I've found they are faster on recharge than Duracell or Energizer Alkalines!

. . . another thumbs-up for the Sanyo Eneloops. Like the old Timex watch commercial said . . " takes a beating and keeps on ticking". The Source in my area had a sale on last week and I quickly snapped up more of these. Regular price was $29.99 Cdn for 4 AA batteries . . . sale was $7.49! Would have bought more but they were the last in the store. I have a dozen of these and they really do outperform the Energizers and Rayovacs I have. Trying to find the "New" hybrid Rayovacs that are supposed to use the same technology as the Eneloops but much cheaper in price.

It's true though. It's actually greater than 80%. So far 8 people replied and 7/8 recommended sanyo eneloop. It makes it easier for the OP instead of just reading one opinion and waiting for more people to reply. I can just give him the general recommendation.

i was a longtime Powerex user, then got a set of eneloops for my birthday.
i've since bought a bunch more eneloops, and won't use anything else

I use Energizer E2 Lithium non-rechargeable batteries. I had tried some type of rechargeable batteries, don't remember the brand, but the refresh between flashes was too slow. I don't typically shoot lots of shots at once, but there are times when you need it.
How are the eneloops on the refresh rates? Do they compare to the Energizer E2 Lithium non-rechargeable batteries?

I got Canon CP-E4 with 2500mah Energizer Rechargeables. Could have bought stronger mah batteries, but with the CP-E4 I got plenty of juice as well as fast fast fast recycle time...:D

i am huge fan of the sanyo 2700s. not the eneloops, the sanyo brand. consistent power and the last a long time.
i used to use the energizers but these run circles around them.

The Canon CP-E4 comes with the cord that connects it to your flash. You can set the Custom Function in the 580EX to recycle the flash using the CP-E4's 8 batteries. What I like about this set up is not only you can shoot away without worrying that you have to replace the batteries in the flash unit often (let's say at a wedding) but the flash recycle time is really fast. This can be crucial depending on what sort of shooting you're involved in. So the question about the flash batteries is not so much how long they'll last but more importantly how fast can your flash recyle...

What about a quantum turbo? They are great batteries and they improve recycle times over normal ones. It might be out of your budget but if you can swing it they are supposed to be amazing.

FYI, I looked for Eneloop batteries at Target last night but they only had Duracell, Energizer, and Kodak. Now I see on the website that Ritz/Wolf is the only retailer around me that carries them. I'll probably just order them online.

If you have a CostCo member ship get the starter pack there for around $20.
Or you can go to Thomas Distributing, great online realtor for batteries. I buy all my battries from these guys.

Anyone happen to know where to get that BC-900 charger in Canada? Or a place that will ship it here for a reasonable amount. Thomasdistributing wanted about $23 for shipping but I think that was via the dreaded UPS Ground that incurs huge brokerage charges.\
