I am looking to get my first flash for my Canon 40d and need some advice. The Metz 58 AF-1 (slightly used) is only a few dollars (70 dollars) more than the new 430EX.

I won't be doing anything more than use it outdoors to fill in shadows and inside to take family shots (bounced).

Should I go with the Metz for future needs or go with the Canon?

Thanks,

Chris

For "future needs" going with anything other than a Canon brand is always questionable since future compatibility cannot always be guaranteed. However, if you are only going to be using the flash stand-alone, then the Metz 58 AF-1 is probably a better buy than the 430EX is, considering that the Metz is slightly more powerful, offers a self-contained auto flash mode and has stroboscopic flash capability.
