The Strobist, David Hobby, has released a set of eight DVDs about equipment and techniques for off-camera flash photography. The set costs $139. More info at

My set is on order.

I'd personally rather spend 139 towards a couple of sunpack 383's.
I bet the vast majority of the topics covered on the DVD's are also covered on the strobist blog.

I think all of the info covered in the DVDs is covered in the blog, HOWEVER, Many people learn much better seeing something done rather than reading it.
There is a, in my estimation fairly large, group of people who will benifit greatly from this series. All and All I think it is a great product for a fair price (considering what going to all the seminars would cost) and while I am on the fence about whether it would be money well spent for me, I feel for many it absolutely will be!

This is similar to my thoughts, I know I could probably get as much out of the strobist site as the DVD's, but I think they would be a much better learning tool for me. While $139 inititally sounds like alot to spend, it's really not for what you're getting.

I've been reading the Strobist site for a while now but that 10 minute clip from the DVD really pulled things together. Something seemed to click in my head as I watched him set up the shot. I ordered the DVDs and think it will really help me (but I need all the help I can get with lighting.)

I'm most likely going to get the DVD set as well. I've been reading the Strobist site for nearly a year and I'm currently reading Monte Zucker's book on portrait photography and the ever so popular Light Science & Magic. I've read Joe McNally's book and another book on portrait photography by Mark Cleghorn. But it's the videos I seem to learn the best from. Seeing the actual setup and results is great and really clicks for me.
I got a chance to watch an instructional video of Joe McNally do a set up on lighting, and that's when I bought my initial round of lighting gear. It was like going from zero to 60 in nothing flat.
So, yeah I think the videos are in my future.

I just finished ordering the DVD set as well. I think it will be neat to see and I learn much better by watching it than reading about it. (Plus I never seem to find time to read their blog that much anyhow.) It was the 10 minute clip that sold me on it as well.
I will however be watching these and then reselling them in the 'Sell' forum I almost never watch anything like this more than once, so I guess if you're looking for a set on the cheap keep your eyes out because they will be on there in a few weeks.

The bonus discs are great! This DVD set is going to help a bunch of people with their photography.
I assisted on these DVDs, and I even learned new things watching the DVDs even though I was there live.

Sold out! David made a thousand of these DVD sets and all have been sold. Good thing I ordered right away. My set arrived today so I'll be looking at them this weekend.
Word is that more sets are being prepared and will be ready for purchase in about four weeks.

Ok, for those of you who got and watched the DVDs, what's the feedback? Are they everything you hoped and more? Little disappointed? Just looking to hear what the folks here have to say.

It was well worth the money for me. I've read his site for some time but hadn't really put it all together. Watching him work through a shoot really put it all in place for me. I feel like now I could go out and actually get good results where before I didn't have a single clue how to start.
The only drawback is now I need to go and buy a bunch more flashes...

Just plain awesome. So much good info it gets confusing. (in a good way.)

I've gone through about half of the set so far. A portion of the information was review due to my reading of the blog. For me it is nice to actually see someone put the techniques to use, just pulls everything together for me.
I give them a thumbs up, worth the price of admission for me.

I just have to know.
Was I the only one who laughed at the slow-motion instant-replay of the little incident in the pool video?
Not the incident itself, but the fact we got it replayed.

I wonder if the strobist is ever tempted to move up to medium format?...now that he's making all this money from seminars/sponsors/dvds it's gotta be tempting :)
Trade those speedlites for a ranger pack or two? gotta be tempting :)
BTW - I've never seen the DVDs but am very impressed by the strobist's ability to communicate and teach photography. I"m sure that any video he puts out would be an excellent investment.

I went to the Seattle seminar. The first few DVD's were filmed during a seminar in MD, so that stuff was a repeat for me, but I still watched.
The bonus material is pretty cool, but again, sort of a repeat if you've been following the blog and contributing to the assignments. There's not a lot of "new" information, but it's still nice to see David put it all together and talk through what he's doing.
Worth it? I'd say so.
