View Full Version : Sync in sunlight

Has anyone had a problem syncing two lights in sunlight using pocket wizards? I can't get one of them to fire. Of course, if I plug the sync cord into the camera for the lights and also, have the p.w. I'm ok. But, way too many cords. That's the purpose of having the p.w. Any thoughts/help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Put one PW on your hot shoe, and attach a pocket wizard to each of your flashes. Works great -- and no cords.

Are both lights hooked up to a Pocket Wizard? If not, then that is your problem. The optically triggered strobe may not be "seeing" the flash of the PW triggered strobe so it's not firing. If you want to use strobes outdoors, they should all be connected to a PW unit or a sync cable. Optical triggers is going to be problematic at best and should be avoided outdoors.

Thanks, I know how to work the pocket wizards. The trouble I am experiencing is that the other light won't sync.

So, are you saying that both lights are hooked up to a PW unit? If so, did you try swapping PW units and/or cords to narrow down the source of the problem?

Ahhh.... so a third PW is required outside? One for both strobes, one for camera? Different from indoor where only one PW is required on one strobe??

Ok, so I had one PW on one strobe and thought the other strobe (without a PW) would slave as it does indoors. And, obviously, one on the camera.

I always attach a PW to a flash (unless I'm using my Alien Bee's indoors). They sync flawlessly.

Nope, the second strobe is using its optical trigger indoors, which has very limited use. You need a PW on each strobe you want to fire, to be sure...

Ok, so it's an outdoor thing. Got it! Thanks so much, everyone!

Sounds like nothing that another $200 won't cure. Isn't this a great hobby?

I have plenty of sync cords. Hate them! I'll be spending the $200 shortly.
