This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 48hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read (Before and After #65).

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

this will end on Saturday 10pm EST

Here is an old shot with a P&S while I was in Rio (City of Niteroi) where I seriously ran out of lens. To put things in scale, that tiny itty-bitty cross on the hill way in the background is the "Christ the Redeemer" statue. I can't wait to see these edits! ;)

P.s. I couldn't find any copyright conflicts with the inserted Gilligans picture. Please let me know if it's an issue and I will remove it.

Rotated clockwise a tad to straighten.
Cropped.
Cloned out the guy on the bench and the black drain hole (?) in the wall.
The crop made the guy sitting on the wall dead center, so I copied him, flipped him and moved him off to the side.
Adjusted levels and added contrast overall, then again just on the island.
Dodged the houses to bring them out a little bit more.
Noise reduction/sharpened.
Border.

I think that's it.

I've been so busy for the past month I haven't been able to play much. ... But I've learned so much from all of you guys that I just had to try to find some time. For this one, I wanted to see what I could do in under 10 steps. Here's my go:

1. Rotate clockwise 1 degree to level horizon
2. Enhance detail in sky by copying layer @ 85% opacity set on multiply blend via layer mask
3. Reduce the haze on the hills in the BG by color replacement
4. Clone away all people and funky stuff on the ground (this took most of the time)
5. Sharpen island (USM 80,1,1) on separate layer; reveal via mask @ 100%
6. Soften sky & BG via GB@ 3 pixels; reveal via layer mask @ 75%
7. Bump overall contrast
8. Re crop to pano
9. Noise reduction @ 70% color & 70% luminance
10. Add quick border

Okay, I know this is a tough one because it was such a poor shot to begin with.

Lee, I appreciate your tribute, corny but cute. ;)

Zero, you definitely did a fantastic job with the sky in particular...I love the broad spectrum of tones!

Silver, very good job with the cloning.

Incubus, you have me believing that Rio is near one of the poles with your Aurora-esque scene...very imaginative. ;)

Suzy, I'm giving you the win...the sky looks good, you have possibly the best crop, IMO, and I loved the move to left-shift the subject weight and to bring out the whites in a purer form. Another solid turn-in by what appears to be the most consistent editor that I have seen.

Good job everybody...thanks for participating and sharing your methods, as always!

:D

congrats suzyb, your edit is quite good :)

I must say that I found this picture harder to edit than the others that I had done. I just couldn't come up with something that I liked :(
