Hi
The Omni flash diffusers don't add any area to the flash so are they really adding any useful diffusion? Are they just reducing the output preventing slight overexposure and couldn't I achieve the same affect by simply dialing down the flash a little (and extend my battery life) ?

Nobody has responded so I guess that answers your question.

Make yourself a bounce card. It's cheaper and more effective.

I made one of these

with the funfoam from Walmart.

What a difference it makes, and it folds flat. Very cool

Indoors, they are bouncing the light on ceilings, walls, floors -- they can make a HUGE light source. They are well worth it.

Outdoors, just keep it in your bag.

Indoors the ceilings, walls, floors are the HUGE light source, not the omni-bounce.

Learn to bounce the light without one and you will be better off in the long run.

Short answer: if you know what you're doing: no. If you have no idea: yes (inside).

I used one but it didn't add much that a swivel/bounce of the flash couldn't do.

I got good results with an index card rubberbanded to the flash as well. Much cheaper than the STOFEN too. ;)
