Has anybody got one of the canon adapters that allows you to run your camera off mains power? I have a canon a40 and I would like one but I can't imagine why they expect you to pay $120 for a transformer and some wires.. has anybody successfully used a generic adapter instead?

Hi,
I've used an universal adapter with 4.5 volts. Canon said it needs 4.3 volts!!!!
I just did that a couple of times and the camera still works.
I've read in this forum, that they do not recommend that, but MAYBE it's because they support Canon's sales policy.
As I said, I tried with an adapter Skytronic "Sky 1000st" and it went well....
I did not try for a longer period than 2 minutes and took a couple of pictures!
I hope this can help!
Regards

Apparently you must be aware of the Amperage. Too high is very unhealthy and not recommended. Too low and you get poor performance and could still cause damage.
As posted by Stuart in an earlier post of the same topic I'd have to agree that if you are using rechargeable batteries an ac adaptor would be a waste of money. For the amount of time I have my camera turned on to unload photo's to my computer it certainly doesn't make any sense to me to buy an adaptor.

The amperage is 1000ah....
The adapter is a Skytronic Sky1000 ST...
My rechargeable batteries are Hahnel NIHM 1800 and 2000, but the A40 can be connected to a video and can work as a videocamera (without sound) and I use it for 1-2 hours at a time.....
The link to the adapter I bought is: http://www.skytronic.com/uk/com/prod/search.php?s=660.375
