For those that sell pictures do you use a near by photo shop or go online to get pictures developed and what is the name of the shop?

For those of you that order from Mpix.com how do the pictures turn out that aren't the same size as the picture you send in? Like a 5X7 do the crop the picture or do they leave blank space? I'm just curious before I order from them.

Like any print service...you need to crop it. If you dont crop it to size before you upload it, you have an opertunity to crop it to your liking. But the bottom line is you have to crop it at some point.

I'll third www.mpix.com. You need to crop correctly wherever you send your prints. If you let them do it, there's the chance to get it wrong.

I've used Shutterfly (http://www.shutterfly.com/) and I've been very happy with the prints. One of these days I'll try mpix and compare the results.

I noticed if you want to use a mix of the different papers from MPIX, you have to place seperate orders. (pay shipping for each type of paper)
Does that bother any of you current MPIX customers?
Also, they do not accept AMEX.
Are they still worth using compared to Walmart or Costco?

Yeah, it bothers me quiet a bit actually.

I've used MPIX and I like it.
I just ordered a 20x30 metallic paper print, can't wait to see how the metallic paper looks. What I like about MPIX is the fact that they let you upload big files (unlike some which only take jpgs). I uploaded a 68MB tiff files a couple days ago :D

Wow I didn't realize you could upload photos that big to them. My main reason for asking was becuase I'm looking to sell some prints but wanted to make sure I went with a good site. Of course I'll get prints for myself to see how they look before I send them out to anyone.

I use Costco for all my printing needs. At 14 cents (for a 4x6), their prices are unbeatable.

I used Walgreens for my small stuff until tonight (Christmas Eve!). I needed prints tonight, so I needed to print two miniaturized portraits of my daughters to use in my wife's locket. The Walgreens on the corner has a fast FujiColor digital imaging center, so I burned a CD and took it to the store, popped my CD into the "self-serve" kiosk. The store's copyright ogre stopped me, saying that the images looked too professional, and that he wouldn't process the picture. I was dumbfounded. We had a four minute discussion about how the pictures looked like they had a professional background (a white wall), and lighting (a bounce flash), and that Walgreens was very strict about "applied copyright" and that he could lose his job, blah blah blah. I explained that I had most certainly taken the pictures, but he wouldn't budge.
(So I went up the street to CVS Pharmacy. No problem there.)
I guess you can only take your amateur snapshots to Walgreens.
Thanks for letting me gripe.

Wow. Give some people just a little bit of power, huh? Thats unbelievable. Anyway, I got an advertisement through the mail from Mpix with a sample of that metalic paper. I can't wait untill I get the right shot to order a print on it. The stuff looks awsome.
Oh, yea. I've been going to Walgreens when they have the 20 cent a print sale. One Walgreens I go to has a Kodak machine and another has a Fuji. I think the Fuji's are better.

Hi avnerd,
I would write a letter to the Walgreens manager and complain.

I have all of my printing done at a local lab - Phopar. They are also on the web - www.phopar.com. They have a few different options for uploading - including ftp for larger files.

JX,
You should have taken a peice of blank paper from the manager at the photolab and wrote a copyright release right in front of them. I got the same "hassle" at a Walmart, but she backed down when I gave it to her. I signed it and showed her my driver's license. I told her that it was the legal document that she was looking for. She backed down and gave the order to me.
I had to use Walmart becuase we needed pictures, the day before Christmas. I uploaded them through the Walmart site.

While I can imagine that wedding photo looking great on the metallic paper, are there any other guidelines for what is "appropriate" for it? I noticed that Mpix says that it's not recommended for portraits.

I use Costco for all my printing needs. At 14 cents (for a 4x6), their prices are unbeatable.
I've been using Costco for a while now and it's cheap, real cheap...the prints though now that I color manage my photos seem to be going down hill. I went to the that...ah, creek site (can't remember what it's called) and got some of the Costco profiles. I actually tried to send the prints through with Adobe RGB, that was a big mistake. The colors were really off. sRGB seems to be the best so far so I've just kept it on that profile for now. I do "preview" the image in Photoshop with the costco glossy profile today before I sent them in (but keep it in sRGB) and notice that blacks turning a little green which I was hopping it wouldn't really show up because I never notice it before, sure enough though it did.
I don't just set it to the coscto profile because I'm not always sure they will use that printer. So now that I'm starting to get really picky, I probalby won't print at Coscto unless I just want some quick prints in a hurry.
So what do you normally do when using MPIX (or any other place)? Do you convert to their specific printer profiles before uploading or do you use a generic profile? I'd love to find out how to get better color. It may be because I'm getting too picky but wondered what other do.

Let me add something about what I saw with my costco prints. I looked at them in bright sunshine when I picked them up today, that's where I saw the blacks turn kind of green (like in the profile preview in Photoshop). Looking at them now in Tugent lighting, I don't really notice it, so that's probaby why I didn't notice it before but it's definatly gone a little flat in those areas.

Ah, I found it, MPIX FAQ's had the answer, duh, lol.
What color space does Mpix accept?
Mpix printers output in sRGB color space.
I'll have to remember not to leave it in Adobe RGB because I've seen the color loss when another profile clips them.

I've only used 1 online place so far, and it's been Mystic Color Lab (http://www.mysticcolorlab.com). They had a special where when you sign up with a new account, you get 30 free prints (just pay shipping, which was like $2.43 or something). I got them and I think they turned out quite well. They say they have unlimited storage space for you, so you can upload large files, and they accept things other than just JPG (also TIF, PNG, and I think a few others). They also have mailers you can request so you can send in rolls of film for them to develop if you want.
They also have a feature that lets you print your digital images out at 4x5.3 rather than 4x6 so it doesn't have to crop, which I think is kind of cool in a way. You get 20 free prints now for signing up, so if you want to spend a couple bucks in shipping to get 20 prints to test, I'd say it's worth a shot and see if you like it.

I sent MPIX my first order last night. Actually, it was THREE orders because I wanted to try all 3 paper types. (Extra $10 in shipping, but hopefully it is worth it)
Total of 20 items for $30.27
* (2) 8x10s, & a 5x7 on metallic paper
* (2) 5x7s & a 4x6 in "True" B&W
* (16) misc 4x6s on Traditional E-Surface
<*Crosses Fingers*>
Any estimate on how long it takes for delivery, from KS to Eastern PA?
P.S. TQ, I'm going to hold you personally responsible if I am not satisfied with the results!!!! :p j/k.

OMG, was it woth it! :D :D :D
I had the same pictures done at Costco, Walmart & my local photo store. MPIX wins in all cases. (My local photo store was real close though)
The "True B&W" was so much better than I expected.
The "Metallic" paper is so awesome. I had 2 8x10s done, & they actually make my pictures look better. (that's not too hard to accomplish) :)
The regular color prints, now get this, actually look like what I see on my screen.
The packaging is really over the top for me. You would think they were shipping an original print of Ansel Adams, or something.
I would love to use them for every print, but I'm a cheapskate. so this is my plan:
"snapshots", test prints, & stuff I'm not overly concerned about; I'll just use Costco or WalMart.
Stuff that I REALLY REALLY want printed: MPIX.
If for some reason I need it back in 24 hours, I'll use my local photo store.
Hmmmm... time to start reprinting a bunch of other stuff I have. :D
Take care

For the few and far between UK bods who might be interested, I recently did a comparison of two online print services.
Jessops are fairly well known so I wanted to see how they turn out, and I heard of http://www.photobox.co.uk/ through a friend.
With Jessops you have to download software to send your shots, photobox doesn't require this. Jessops offer free prints whereas photobox don't.
Photobox seem generally cheaper than Jessops. Jessops don't offer bulk buy discounts like Photobox do. You also have much more control over your crop with Photobox if you're printing an image that's slightly over your chosen dimensions. Both have their strong and weak points.
Anyway, I picked a colour print I like, and a black and white, and ordered a copy of each from both sites on the same night (a sunday). The order would have been processed and posted the next working day which meant the earliest they could arrive is Tues.
Photobox arrived on Tues and Jessops arrived on Weds.
In comparing the print quality there wasn't a great deal in it - at least not to the amateur eye, however Photobox did produce better black tones on the b&w shot and the colours were deeper on the colour shot. Both services used the same brand of print paper (Fujufilm, fujicolour crystal archive)
The result? Well Jessops don't charge p&p on their free shots so I ordered up to my free limit from them, but I think for speed of service, cost and quality, I'll be ordering from Photobox for future prints.

I usually use either Walmart or my local photoshop. I can upload to both and go pick up the pictures in an hour. Most of those photos are just snap shots that I don't care that much about. I just took you alls' Mpix suggestion and sent in some of my daughter's senior pictures and some picture I processed in B&W of our farm. I'm anxious to see them.
