Here is a shot of my son hitting a triple. While my timing could've been better, I love the look of determination in his face.

It's good to get the face like that, but this shot would be better probably a hair later as he is discarding the bat and exiting the box.
Crop / shoot tighter. You do not need the catcher in this shot at all. It would also be nice to blur out the fence in the back, though I realize you are limited in speed on the long end.

Why f/10? Open the aperture to max to minimize DOF and increase shutter speed. Zoom in closer too.
Congrats to your son on the triple.

Thanks guys. Yup I definitely need to work on my timing. Why F10? I believe when this shot was taken I was in Av mode. I soon switched to manual and I think the aperture went to 5.6. I still have allot to learn. I also found myself getting caught up in the game watching it instead of shooting it. I guess that's a huge newbie mistake.
A question about cropping; Should he fill the frame or should I go for the rule of thirds?
Swampler-thanks. Last year he couldn't get a hit to save his life; this year he's been on fire.

Av mode is where you set the aperture and the shutter speed is automatic, hence the question (I could see this happening if in Tv, P, or even one of the automatic modes). If it went to 5.6 in manual, then that's where it was last time you used the camera as manual doesn't set anything automatically. Keep at it and be sure to read the manual. You'll get there...we all started somewhere.
As for the crop, I would fill the image. Rule of thirds don't really apply when the image is filled with the subject. Here's an example:

If your going to print the photo, make sure you leave some space around the photo. I just learned that one. I shot the photos tight and then went to print them and whoops I forgot the camera doesn't shoot 1:1. Still getting used to the whole digital thing.

OR, get a focusing screen with the crop lines etched like procrop, and you can compose properly in the camera for a different aspect ratio.
