My first ever picture post, I have only used a point and shoot camera until I splashed out and picked up a 20D what do you all think?

Quite nice!

Couple of things to think about (if you don't mind):
- Looks like there is some front-focus. Do not rely on multiple focus points or AI servo when shooting still people - AI servo tries to lock on closest point. Use one point only - lock focus to eyes. If you use center point only it is most accurate AF point --- center lock + recompose method could however mean off focus if you are very close.
- after a P&S: remember that 2.8 on your P&S is about f11 on DSLR. This means the DoF and how it is understood and used in photos is one of the most important things to learn - been there myself.
- go closer (unless you are using the shot as "masked away" material).
- her eyes are not looking at the camera. Either they should or they should be clearly other way. Inbetweens do not work and look more like errors.

More images please! :)

I think this is quite nice for the first time. I agree the focus point is on the leg and should be on the eyes and I would have liked to seen her turned so the private parts are not looking right at the camera. The hands do a lot and if possible incorporate them in the photo.

what lens did you use, and how did you do your lighting.

in a few months I will also buy a 20D, particularly for outdoor shooting, but i'm also getting interested in pics like these, so all the info is welcome :d

I like the shot of the girl in cat T-shirt. She seems relaxed. In the pink/yellow shot she is perhaps "overheated" by the strobes but without enough light power on her face. If you twitch you eyes you'll see better how the light distiribution goes. Expression is nice, though.

I like the first portrait but it would have been better if the subject is looking towards camera
