Somone got married at the beach we shoot at and ended up setting off a bunch of fireworks. Used the classic long exposure hand in front of the lens trick. Enjoy

Thanks. Had just put all my gear away from doing a shoot and was about to start walking home then these started going off. So I had to put everything down unpack the camera and throw it on the tripod real quick. It was crazy!!
Thanks for the comments ;)

What was the aperture and shutter speed that you used?

10 sec exp
f14 to f18
iso 100
Would use my hand to cover the lens during exposures so even though its a ten sec exposure probably only 4 of those seconds were visible to the lens. The rest of the time i had my hand in front of the lens.
Thanks for the comments!!

Nice pictures. Do you mind explaining exactly what your hand technique accomplishes?

So what was the logic for 10 secs? I mean the actual exposure was 4 secs only. Right?

Do you pull your hand away when one firework is going off, then put it back on until the next goes off? Is this used to get more than one firework without overexposing? I don't get it.

Yeah if i just left the shutter open for ten seconds there would be more streaks and movement of the smoke and people etc. By covering the lens with my hand ( a black piece of cardboard works better) i could selectively capture what i wanted without overexposing to much. Here is a good example were i didnt cover up the lens. It was the grand finale and i was tired of covering and uncovering so i just let it go. Theres more bluring and movement in the last shot than in the others.

Very clever! So you just take you hand off when one explodes basically?

That seems to be a good strategy for shooting fireworks. Thanks a lot for sharing the secret. I really like the pics...

Yeah pretty much. That way you can kinda select what you want in the picture. This system works well for lightning shots too but is more difficult as the lightning is alot more unpredictable. Thanks for all the comments and hope I helped you out a bit too. This site is a great learning tool!!:)
