Photographing a mineral collection

In addition to photography, I collect rocks and minerals. I've tried photographing some of them, but haven't been happy with the results. I used the 100mm macro and twin lite flash, but parts of the rock are overexposed. Also tried a soft box to diffuse the light, but the rock looked a little flat and you can't see any of the facets on the quartz.

If anyone can share some tips, you will have done a very good deed and maybe Santa will bring you more L glass.
