I think these are mayflies but I'm not 100% sure.

Still not much out around here but I got these over the weekend. Still waiting on my MPE-65 lens to get here. :(

I don't know what it is but those are great shots! I'm still just starting to learn about digital photography but I am interested in how you got the dark background in the pics. They are really stunning!

Great shots and lighting. Looks very "young".

I am interested in how you got the dark background in the pics.

The dark background is really just a function of there being nothing close behind it to reflect the flash.

If you think of this shot being taken without any flash at all, at that ISO, magnification and aperture there just wouldn't be enough natural light to really illuminate anything, so if that picture was taken with those settings without any flash all I would get is a black frame.

So then with the flash the only things that are going to show up in the frame is stuff that the flash hits and has the light reflected back into the lens, in this case the bug and the leaf. If there had been other leaves or stuff close behind the bug they would show up as well.

I hope something in there makes some sense!

My MPE-65 came yesterday too. :D Still no twin flash though. :(
