View Full Version : Summer, Chicago area POTN meet

Hey Northern Illinois, Northwest Indiana, and Wisconsinites! I've been with out a viable computer for a couple of weeks now and I'm sending this from work...(shh...don't tell the boss...) Anyhoo... we've all been thinking about a summer meet but nobody seems to have too many ideas and dates in mind.
I'm pretty flexible as far as dates go. I'll throw out a few suggestions as to shooting locations:
Botanic Gardens
Lincoln Park or Garfield Park conservatories
Starved Rock
Morton Arboratum
Volo Auto Museum ( yeah, I know...pretty limited...)
Back to city, we've got a gorgeous Museum Campus on the lakefront that wasn't really covered last year.
Any one of the local zoos (although I'm pretty zoo'ed out)
Any other ideas, dates in mind??

any place where the cta can provide transportation. lol. I have no car to use for the summer.

I don't have a whole lot of other ideas, but I like the idea of the Botanic Gardens, the conservatories, starved rock and the morton arboretum.
There's also Cantigny in wheaton (http://www.cantigny.org/) and they have the best of both worlds... gardens AND tanks. There's even a photo contest on their home page.
Canon has a photo contest for State or National Park photos... of which Starved Rock qualifies, I believe.
I went with a group of folks to an old Brach's candy factory to photograph it about a year ago (it's since been demolished)... but perhaps a whacky 'industrial' setting somewhere in the city?

I'd love to go to Starved Rock or the Morton Arboretum.

The lakefront, Burnam Harbor and the museum campus is quite active and beautiful this time of year! But whatever you decide is fine. If you decided on a road trip, I have a van if needed and can accomidate others...:) with a little help for gas.

Lakefront, Millenium Park, Museum campuses & Starved Rock all sound neat. We're out of town for the last week of June & 1st week of July. (Niagra Falls, NY, BOS, PA)

Pretty much up for anything at this point, I've got EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh the week of July 28-August 3 and am busy July 4th weekend as I'm sure everyone else is. So far the list Ed has thrown out looks good and I'm with him with Zoo's for the time being. Any plans to attend Bristol again this year?

The big places, Millennium Park, Gardens, Museum Campus... EVERYONE goes to take photos there. You all should find a place that hardly anyone has been to and do it there.
I agree with the industrial meet. Good luck.

How about the Chicago River Walk with or without an architectural boat tour? There are the bridges, Wacker drive and many buildings.

Count me out this time folks. Due to some unforseen complications with the pregnancy I'm pretty limited on my ability to travel...I can't even head north to spend a week with my mom. I'm just happy I'm not on bed rest. :D
Good luck on the meet planning though!

July's good for me. June's looking pretty full already. All those ideas sound fun.

I can't guarantee any specific time/day as I have an infant son and it depends on a babysitter's availability. But the longer notice I have, the better my odds of finding one. ;)
Also, I have a ford escape, so if we wish to carpool, I can take up to 3 folks. Also, I'm in the west suburbs, not far from morton arboretum and such, so I could pick people up from the train station if I'm able to come.
Another possible idea is the DuPage forest preserve. There an equestrian center in Wheaton that has about 30 horses and a couple foals (one born and one expected really soon ... http://www.danada.info)... depending on if you want a facility like that or not... I don't know. Lot's of nice trails and lakes in the area as well and I know where there's a Great Blue Heron rookery in walking distance if anyone's into birds...

Personally anything with nature appeals to me but wouldn't mind trying some urban shots as well.

July 12th has 2 events in Milwaukee and Racine, respectively. The thundercluckers airshow, and the pro beach volley ball tour. The beach volleyball is at North beach, Racine and the air show, I believe, is on the lakefront. any interest in either of those?

I'm sorry I'm not more involved but the only cumputer access I have at the moment is at work ,and I'm out in the field for most of my workdays.:( For what it's worth I like the idea of the riverwalk and architectural boat tour. If any one wants to take the lead on this it would be great. I think the weekend of July 19/20th would be a good one as nobody has ruled that out yet. Keep in mind that it does not have to be an elaborate event or a very regimented schedule. First we need to plan on a concrete date and place, then we can hash out a schedule.;) We'll print you some pictures Tiff!:D:D

Looks like we need a couple pieces of information where we set up a poll (maybe?) to get a concensus on:
1. Selection of dates
2. Possible location(s)
Do we need to know anything else? (besides what the winning lottery numbers are)

Remember we have the Ren Faire in Bristol WI coming up as well if anyone is interested and it runs every weekend from July 5th through Sept. 1st. The people there love to have their pictures taken so its a great opportunity for those who'd like to brush up on their people shooting. I'm always up for another Chicago downtown and lakefront meet, last year was a blast. I also think a Starved Rock meet up would be alot of fun. If they allow grilling we could have a cookout for lunch which would be a good op for everyone to catch up and give any new folks a chance to get acquainted with the group.

I'm gonna vote Ren Faire as long as it is not the weekend of Aug. 9th and 10th. We can't seem to nail down an event for the Chicago group, I understand its that time of year where alot of folks have plans already in place and with gas being as high as it is I'm sure some are kinda squeamish to make a decision about driving too far. I think we need to get a poll up just to get an idea of numbers for locations suggested thus far, I'll have a go at it tomorrow if I get some time to sit down and go through the thread.

I would love to meet up with you guys this summer. My schedule is all wonky because my husband travels for work and my mom is in Europe for a couple weeks -- that leaves me with no babysitters. July is going to be tough. I won't vote in the poll because it's not definite that I can come, but once something is selected I'll try my best.
I'm in Janesville but my mom is 15 minutes from Chicago, so anywhere in between works fine for me as long as I can get someone to watch the kids. :)

Well guys I'm seeing a couple votes here and there but I'm assuming most people haven't even noticed the poll. From the initial results though it looks like a majority of us want to hit the Lakefront again along with the Chicago Botanic Gardens and sounds like we might have a small group for Bristol on the 12th of July. I can't say for sure if I'll be able to make Bristol this year but I'm gonna try. Would really like to get some more votes in but I think at this point the Lakefront is popular enough that we should start considering a date.

Has anybody considered the lakefront during the Air and Water show in August? I just asked my husband if we could go. I would like to try my 100-400. Would like to bring another lens, but it will probably be foolish to change lenses on the beach.

Actually Mike there was a poll but just as I feared it got buried almost immediately, for those who missed the poll it's here POTN Chicago Poll (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=527579). Well I'm thinking we should organize a get together for Chicago Lakeshore for say August 30th just to put a date on the board. Would anybody be opposed to that date? I'd just like to get a number out there so we can start getting an idea of who can attend and if need be we can adjust the time frame. The first half of August is pretty well booked for me so anything from the 30th on should work out and being a month and a half away should be plenty of time for anyone who would like to attend to get their schedules in order. I'll open the floor up for suggestions now and if need be I can put up another poll just for this event.

Excellent idea Eric! Plenty of time to re-arrange schedules. I would also suggest that folks communicate with fellow POTN'ers and try to carpool to save on gas and parking. I, for one, have room for 3 people...just a thought;)

Ed and myself (I may ring a buddy) are meeting at the Botanic Gardens (http://www.chicagobotanic.org/) when they open (they open at 7am (http://www.chicagobotanic.org/visit/hours), so maybe not exactly when they open maybe around 8ish).
I know this is short notice, but it would be really great if more of you could join us (stuffjunkie, im counting you in).
PM me for my phone # if any of you are interested.

I keep checking back to see what's going on and if there is a scheduled event.
There is a big Horse show jumping/Grand Prix event at Lamplighter Farms in Wayne starting -- I believe -- tomorrow and going thru the weekend. From the article I read a week or so ago, some of the Olympic jumpers are supposed to be there. As I recall, the Grand Prix is really exciting to watch.
I'm planning on going on Saturday and I thought I'd throw this out there if anyone is interested in joining me. If you're interested in action/animal photography, it should be fun. The weather report looks to be cloudy and no rain for the weekend, which could give some nice shots. If you're interested, PM me and we can set a time to hook up. For those of you that don't know where Wayne is, it's far western suburbs, kinda at the end of Army Trail Road.

Michael (Franko515) - I leave for Florida on 8/12 to shoot baseball for a week, doesn't that sound like fun? It shouldn't be too hot in FL in August. After I get back would love to come out to a meet. Keep in touch. I'll bring the 400/2.8 for everybody to try.

I usually have the tripod with, but I only use it maybe 30% of the time. I like using the 100mm f/2.8 macro a lot there. I'm looking forward to using the 85L wide open at 1.2 though;)

Let me know, just don't want them to go to waste if someone could use them.

I was there! And it was a lot of fun. I may have seen you, not sure, I wandered off a few minutes early to get ahead of the pack. I'd like to go back to the farmers market, the Conservatory and well....just complete the loop. I'd never have know the Lilly pond was there if it hadn't been pointed out to me. Shot a few pics met a few folks. Sure hope to do that again soon.

Just a reminder that we had talked about a fall outing to Starved Rock. Last year we had a good time but wound up going a bit late into the season and missed most of the color. Hey Chicago friends.
I was asked to take pictures of a Dodge Charger of a guy who lives in Lockport. Since I'm not really familiar with the Chicago area I was wondering if any of you know any good places to take some car shots. Nice/interesting background suggestions or just any tips on getting a good shot.
I know this is a pretty vague question but I thought I'd ask. Here is a shot of his car if your interested.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be going to Starved Rock on October the 25th. I have also invited the photogs that attended the Kelby walk over the summer. ANYBODY that's interested please post so that we can maybe carpool and save on some gas. The park itself opens at about 8 AM but the trails are accessible earlier. Last year I got there before sunrise and got some spectacular shots...

Well, it's on for Starved Rock on the 25th. For anyone that is still subscribed here is some basic information:
The park and trails are open from 5AM to dusk (The Visitor's Center does not open until 9AM)
Directions:
I-39 southbound: South to I-80 east (exit #59). Go 2 miles to exit #81 (Rt. 178, Utica). Go south (right) 3 miles on Rt. 178 and follow the signs into the Park.
I-39 northbound: North to Exit #48 (Tonica exit). Go east (right) for approximately 5 miles to the T-intersection, which is Rt. 178. Go north (left) for approximately 5 miles and follow the signs into the Park.
I-80 Eastbound and Westbound: Get off at exit #81 (Rt.178, Utica). Go south 3 miles on Rt. 178 and follow the signs into the Park.
From the Chicago area: Take I-294 or I-355 south to I-55. Take I-55 south to I-80. Go west on I-80, 45 miles to Exit #81 (Rt. 178, Utica). Go south (left) 3 miles on Rt. 178 and follow the signs into the Park
Here is a link to the website.

I called their information line (815667-4906). The recording stated that as of this weekend, the fall colors are at 30%. So we should have some really nice color to photograph.
I also checked on the extended weather forcast. Right now they are calling for 20% chance of rain and it will be partly cloudy. Neither is a deal breaker and actually, depending on the clouds it could make for some really nice photography. I will re-check the forecast closer to Saturday. I hope some of you are still interested;)

You're south of the city, right? I might have room for one more...send me a PM. It's almost a 2 hour drive for me and I'd like to get there by 6:30 to may catch the sunrise. Having said that, we probably wouldn't hit the trails until 7:30-8:00 or so...This part is somewhat flexible;)
