Is there a reason why we cannot have more than 8 pictures in a thread?

It kind of kills the set if you have 8 pictures and 2 links....

It's not like we're using the site's bandwith anymore, and no one has super low-res monitors, so I can't see why this rule is active .

2. You may embed **) maximum of eight ( photos per thread. This means: you may embed up to 8 photos when you start a new thread. You may embed additional photos if requested, but only in a reply to other member's post. If photo size exceeds 1024x1024 box, you may not embed it: post a link (URL) to it instead.

Sorry if it's already been discussed, but I had a good photoset and it was cut short right before the good pics :( haha.

Thanks

When a thread is overloaded with pictures from the outset I tend to get overwhelmed and comment on none of them. But, if there are only one or two photos I will usually comment. That's my feeling for why the rule is probably there..
Edit: For a trip report, or a story though it's a bit different and I don't mind that as much. I'll usually pick a few to comment on, not the whole bunch though.

cause that's how they want it.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to load a thread with 24 images when on a dial up connection? Not everyone has has a T-1 or other broadband connection so the 8 image rule for embedded images was chosen as a happy medium.

Even with broadband it can be a burden waiting for everything to load. The restriction is also in place to keep you from using POTN as your gallery. If you want to show more photos from a session, feel free to link people to your website. If they're sufficiently impressed/interested, they'll follow the link.

I noticed that the system counts smilies as pictures. I made a post with 8 embedded images and a smiley yesterday and it said I was over the 8 image limit. I took it off and it was all good.

Unfortunately, we can't do anything about that particular issue.

Some reasons:
- it forces you to choose the best shots - always preferable!
- POTN is not and should not be a substitute for personal online gallery.
- many people browse with slow net connection (or even mobile).
- loading of images make the whole thread "jump" when remote image server is slow, with lots of photos that makes browsing really hard.
- it's easier to comment fewer photos so you will get more responses which are more specific.

Very nice explanation Pekka. :D Of course, I would have chosen to go with the "because I said so" explanation if it were me. ;)

I'm on dial-up connection and it takes forever to load 8 pics and usually i just go on to something else unless it's someone that their photo's has interested me in the past.

Can't get cable here and i'm not paying $50 a month to Dish Network for internet access

Quite often, when I'm at work and away from my laptop, will peruse through POTN on my smartphone. Yes, I have broadband speeds, but it still takes a little while longer to download the images.

Trust me it’s a blessing. I just finished browsing another site for a lack of nothing else to do and apparently they have no limit on how many you can attach. Was looking at some baseball shots and they just kept coming and coming. There was a total of 105 I think, talk about a pain in the @$$. I think I looked at 3 of em. The 8 rule is a good thing; you can always start another thread.
