Starting my second week with this close up filter
I'm using it on a canon S5 IS, minimal aperture is F8 (F11 with hack) so the DOF is very shallow
these were the best so far:

LOvely series - those Raynox add-ons do give good results (in the right hands).

nice shots, of course f8 on a smaller sensor is probably like f32 on a dslr. Looks like the MR 14 & MT 24 could not be used with the Raynox converter attached, off shoe flash gun would be an answer. I would like such a camera for holidays but am waiting to see if an S6 comes out with RAW.

Nice idea for difuser too john
The S5 can shoot raw (crw -> dng) only with the chdk hack, most of these shots I posted were edited in raw

Are you guys with the DCR 250 shooting in macro mode with the S3? I just picked up a S5 and the 250 for something to carry all of the time...haven't had the chance to experiment yet.

well, i just use the camera as is. . not in any macro mode (though i havent tried it.). almost always i use the AV mode 8.0
or manual 1/200 and aperture 8.0 (8 because the lens has a small DOF.)
then you zoom in and out to get your magnification.
also you will notice there is a bit of vignetting with the lens attached, but it goes away as you zoom in.
and the working distance about 4 inches from the subject. (and remember the DOF is very small, so if you have trouble focusing in, move in and out with the camera, and that will help to see how far/close you can be.
...sorry i ramble...lol

any questions, send me a message, and ill be happy to help out.
i love the raynox dcr 250!

Close up filters wont work with the macro function, you have to zoom in
I shot mostly at 12x
