I am the proud new owner of a 1D Mk II, having used a Nikon F5 for years, and cannot determine how to set the AF for waterskiing photography. I like to shoot slalom skiers with the camera six inches above the surface of the water (plastic bag protecting the camera) and on the F5 I could disable the AF sensors below the centerline so that the surface of the water in the lower part of the picture did not disturb the focus on the rapidly approaching skiier. I do not see any way to do that on the 1D Mk II, and thought I would just need to focus lock (shutter 1/2 way down) on the skiers as they approach and hope that the Al Servo AF will ignore the water in the foreground while I follow at 8fps. I thought this would work because there does not seem to be a closer object preference as there is on the F5.
Any help would be appreciated.

For detailed settings for sports shooter, you can refer it to www.siphoto.com.

As for your question regarding AI Servo, you can always manually select focus point, once a point is selected, camera focuses wherever the point lands on, while the rest of 44 points won't cause any effects.

I've always a fan of back focus button, so when half press shutter, it locks exposure for you.

Page 68 in your manual tells you how to select an AF Point. Your camera will then track the subject using that point as it's focus point.
