These were taken from a Memorial Weekend event. I'd like to thank in advanced all the people who post on this site, the information I gathered before I went and took this shots was so valuable, it made the experience so worth it. Thanks to all!! This was my first attempt at little league so I'm looking for some comments and criticism to see if I'm on the right path.

The first one would be good in portrait mode. 2nd no action/ball. 3rd too muchs pace at the top and again no action.

I tried the 1st in Portrait, but to me it just didn't look as good. Thanks for the C&C!!

I think Bobby meant hold the camera in portrait mode and if so, I agree as you would have gotten all of the pitcher in the frame. This is one area that I am still learning to do as well. I hope to get a Grip soon as it will make it allot easier to shoot that way.

Even though there is no action in #2, I like it. IMHO candids of players are good too.

Thanks Andy! That is something I really need to work on, I did shoot quite a few of the photos in Portrait, some I liked other I didnt. I tend to rely too much on the ability to crop in post processing. Instead of trying to capture the "cropped" version in the camera the first time, like I said, something for me to work on. Thanks for theC&C

The last two look a little soft to me. Looks like missed focus.

I agree to shoot the pitcher shot in portrait orientation.

The candid of the catcher could be a good shot, but I'd include the feet.

These were some of the portrait shots, cropped a bit tighter per C&C....

Much better in Portrait mode and cropped tight.

In the original post, the third and fourth look out of focus. The face of the pitcher in the first also seems OOF, but his jersey looks sharp to me.

Matthew - FWIW, 90%+ of my images are shot or cropped to portrait orientation.

The first shots are a little soft. Not sure why this might be. You show some good timing, though. I use a 400 lens almost exclusively for all levels of baseball, so needless to say, I like tight shots ;) ! In other words, my words to live by are the old cliche' "Shoot tight - crop tighter".

You second group is markedly sharper. How were they handled differently?

Regarding cropping (specifically the shot of the catcher), when you shoot or crop, either go REAL tight, or go loose enough to get his whole body. Personally, I'd go tight (if the shot is sharp enough and can survive being tighter - this one is a bit OOF). When you do crop, do so between the joints so it doesn' look so much like an amputation.

Thanks Dennis,

I'm not sure what happened with the OOF shots, now that I look back they were not the best ones to post. Thats why I wanted to post the others. How were they handled differently, the good ones I nailed the shot the OOF ones I didn't! I'd say user error....
Thanks again for the cropping advice, I worked on said photo and it does make it a better photograph.

I'm gonna try and rent a 400 for the next time I go shoot Baseball again, until then my 70-200 will have do!!

My son, who is 12 throws a mean knuckleball. He is pitching tomorrow, I want to catch him throwing one. He's the only one so far this year who has thrown a KB... and man you should see the faces on those kids, and the coaches! Like wth is that!
