yeah it's not that major BUT to have to load all the actions again sucks...but I need to not have that sudden shut down crap only on opening a new image that sucks

I got the box and book out, gonna check it out

make sure you save any custom actions or brushes you've made!

ok, not so bad, it carried everything over...How great is that! YES!

LeesaB

With this part its having the texture be a more stronger point of interest, usually I use this kind to portray a scan of an old photograph.

-The texture will be layered on top and little if any will be erased over the original photo.

Some dont like this, they say "too distracting", well fu(n)k them:D Thy dont know nuthin.hah.

Example are two photos, a before and after.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/104/364269203_088819f86a.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2282948613_d2c2a36c8b.jpg

With this I added two different textures over it.
One for the film strip (notice at the top of the second photo the lil slots) and then for the shiney spots. It was pure preference as to the textures I used.

I tried to get a dream like effect with this edit.

As with the first style, copying and pasting is the first step. Blending modes are the same, usually overlay.

With this though, I lowered the ocpacity more , and changed the colors of the original photo slightly using Image>Adjustments>selective color.

With that box up I will change the colors section to black. Click the drop down button and it will be the last one. Then I move the bars around until I get the look i want.

The last bar is to darken the photo all together...so say you move the magenta bar to the left, youll notice all the shadow areas get a nice bright green, but if you move the 'black' bar to the right youll notice it will darken the green to a more acceptable level. Again here, just play with it until you get the look you want.

- With both texture layers at the right ocpacity I want I will then gaussian blur the original photo. Play with the blur levels to get them to what you want. With this one I marqueed my hand, feathered and inversed before I blurred.

This will keep my hand more in focus and blur the rest. Give it a better DOF, artificially created of course:D

Now on other photos Ive done I havent went quite as severe on the gaussian blur, just enought to give it that look. Most vintage photos show age, that included softness, color bleeding, fading, scratches etc etc.

To get a look of the colors bleeding youll first duplicate the photo you want to bleed. Change blending mode to colors. Then add a gaussian blur to that duplicated layer, if you do a severe blur youll see what it does, might not want to go to strong but again, this is what is so fun about textures....freedom!

Third way will be coming up soon.

Okay printed as well...now I am set LOL

Usually i take the move tool arrow...and drag the texture onto the photo...then use edit>free transform to stretch it out

Like I told you Stephanie, some people get behind a keyboard and they become total idiots incapable of real emotion or feeling and never see the other person, they only see themselves coming off as what they think are "pro's" They were idiots, they feel good trying to make someone else feel bad, notice no one posted any of their "great" shots huh.

Someone did that to me on the wedding inspiration thread and when I asked him to show us a good example, he did not. Just idiots, that is all.

Good afternoon! We had tornado watch and then warning for about 2 hours so all electronics off and back on.

How is everyone today?

I was considering going outside to take lightning shots. No way! It was windy and trees were coming down the street with cows. :) J/K

Columbus had some warnings, but must not be coming our way. It is humid though for sure.

When the weatherman says get to the basement, you just go! It was very dark and windy. I am glad the electricity didn't go out. The elementary school and middle school lost power so my son came home late.

LeesaB

I'd have no idea what to do if I lost my child during a storm, esp at a school. Not a fun thought at all.

No, next week is. But it was so dark and dangerous outside, it was the right call.

Going out again and another warning is out for the next 6 hours. I hope to come back tomorrow. :(

We have had two confirmed tornados so far...one at the Fairfax-Arlington County line. Also, one confirmed death when a large tree fell on a car in DC.

As Suzy noted...going to be dicey for the next four hours and then it all blows out!

Lisa,

The actions are all stored in a single folder...find that...copy the actions to a temporary folder on your desktop and then copy them back after you reload. That is what I did when I updated from PSCS to PSCS2.

Here is a screen capture that shows you where to find the ATN files.

Hi Jim - thanks :D. I guess I'm sort of a meat and potatoes kind of guy in PS. Sounds like you and I do a lot of the same thing, although I do have Fred Miranda's BW Workflow Pro plug in that I bought. It's allowed me to create some really cool B/W urban landscapes.

Stu,

Very nice photo indeed! I am with you on actions and the like. I tend to PP only for color, contrast, and sharpness; and I do a lot of cropping. I do have some great B&W conversion actions that I like; but even there I often just use the PSCS2 Chanel Mixer in the monochrome mode and do my own B&W adjustments.

GREAT article, I may add it to my blog, It's a change from what we are seeing in wedding magazines saying the opposite, yet whose pictures do they put on the cover and inside. They need to be careful not to bite the hand that feeds them!

Aww, don't let 'em get you down! Sometimes it's hard to hear and sometimes people are just idiots, but posting photos that aren't perfect can help improve your skills dramatically if you can filter the crud and take on board any constructive advice offered. I find constructive advice lacking quite often in threads, but every once in a while, there is a gem.

And it's a shame you took your photos down and then Tom deleted the thread. That doesn't help the next person who is trying to improve and maybe is too shy to post...if just one other person sees you being strong and willing to learn, maybe they would, too. Down the line it also doesn't allow those nay-sayers to eat their words when your next set totally exceeds the first set! ;)

Put 'em up, be proud, let the mods do their jobs to make sure nothing comes to a personal attack and take whatever helpful bits are offered - you've always got us for support, no matter what! Just my two cents.

Ok Lisa, Ill give you two photos to work with...and Ill give you literally a step by step tutorial to recreate the photo I posted with this.

thekid24
4th of June 2008 (Wed), 18:21
Ok here we go

-Open the photo of Olivia

-then open the file of the texture

-Use the Move Tool (v), it is the top right tool on the tools bar..arrow with a cross

-Use that to drag the texture photo over the photo of Olivia.

-SUCESS a solid smooth transfer:p

-Then at the top, click Edit>Free Transform

-Stretch the texture photo over the photo of Olivia, make sure it matches up on all side.

-Then click the check mark to set the transformation.

-In the box that shows both the original photo and texture photo youll see a drop down
menu that reads Normal. Pull down the menu and scroll down the list to Linear burn.

Notice how it burns some of the colors and makes the overall pic look really dark. Not really what we want.

-Scroll down that menu and click soft light

-Notice how it lightly sets the texture on the photo? Thats what we want

-Now erase the texture from Olivia...make sure you keep the background un touched,
you want the texture to stay there.

DONE!

I showed you Linear Burn was to show you what it does, some will lighten, darken, colorize etc. I just want something to lay the texture down evenly, no blotchy areas where it doesnt look right.

Hope that helps.

We got our first Sonic out here a few months ago in Cathedral City. It's not really super close, but someday I hope to get in there to try their food. They had a big fire there, and I can't remember if it was shortly before the opened, or shortly after, but it messed the place up pretty well. They're open again, and appear to be doing a good business. I didn't stop becuase Lois wasn't with me, but we'll try it one of these days soon.

Happy to offer what I can, Stephanie - but always remember:
1 - it's worth what you paid for it
2 - you don't have to agree or even consider it
3 - if your clients are happy, who cares what others think!

Lisa - lazing on the beach all day would be nice. I'm doing web stuff and I hate it - have no grasp of it at all and am so brain fried can't "see" solutions or creative ideas to revamp my web site (which is fine, but quite plain).

Nite, Lisa.

You know what, I find *giving* constructive advice (at least hopefully) also makes me better because sometimes I find it easier to see things in other people's photography that I might overlook in mine for one reason or another. It's one of the best things about the boards, imho, I get to see a wide range of photos and read a wide range of comments. Very helpful especially as I have no in person photography help or support where I am!

Now to get out and do some more shooting - I love it and hate when other things get in the way!

Morning! School today even though power was out last night. It's been a crazy few days with thunderstorms and even a tornado or two not so far away. My hubby took forever to get home last night. He said the power junction was struck and 6 firetrucks were parked on a major road. I was going to try to take pictures at the country club, but it was too dangerous. Next time.

How is everyone? Sorry I haven't been much fun. I'm so tired and still have a lot to do and no end in sight. This weekend should be fun except 95 degrees.

Good Morning Suzy,

We have survived the storms from yesterday and are awaiting Round II this afternoon...hope they are not as bad today.

Are you doing the wedding Saturday morning at the Temple? I sure wish I could help you but my Saturday is totally booked...I have Neighborhood Cleanup Day to manage from 0800 to 1200 and Jules' preschool musical to photograph at 1300...they are using Lake Braddock HS.

Have a super day :)

Act of ___ , I think. The driver walked away, passenger killed. And that was not uncommon to see big trees down yesterday. So sad.

Jim, no wedding as they got another photographer at the last minute. I was relieved. It's an awful driving day. So many graduations around. Obama is speaking tonight about 20 miles from my house, but the road is already jammed with admirers. Really great stuff happening. I was going to go, but at 6 p.m., who knows what the weather will be like. Maybe when I don't have little kids, I'll start being more of a photojournalist. Right now, I'm glad to be inside. Last night we had a billion lightning strikes in the area. So bright.

Good News on Saturday...you are off the hook.

We are still on for September right? I have blocked the 12th as vacation time and the 13th I will help with the reception. I think you told me the 12th & 13th?

Yes, very good.

Ok last step.

This is one of my faves, and its when the texture becomes part of the scene.

Example here
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2124/1841910714_b385518abd_o.jpg

Notice how it looks as if he is standing against a backdrop.

Now even though these are fun to do it is probably the most challenging.

Due to the background on the original has to be plain, simple....easy to work with.

With this I found a kleenex texture, it had soft folds.

As like the others I overlayed it ontop of the photo. Erased the texture from the ground.

-Blurred the background a lil more, and bled the colors a lil bit.

-Then used the lasso tool to select the shadow on the ground and up the background.

-Feathered it to around 25

-Then used levels to bring the shadow in.

-The colors of the photo were just me playing with color levels.

But thats it in a nutshell.

Also keep in mind angle of light, in this photo its coming from the right so shadows should be on left...it may not be the right angle but at the same time I wanted to convey the look as if he was in a elaborate studio, so I kept the shadow at a closer angle.

Automatic hangup for me. Invariably, they're selling things.

I learned something a while back I never new. So many times the phone will ring, and when I answer, nobody's there. I finally complained to the phone company, and they told me it was probably just a telephone solicitor. What they do is place several calls at one time, and as soon as the first person answers, the others are ignored.

Last year we moved our businesses over to our cells....very few use our house phone, I think when we move we probably won't get a house phone unless we have to for some odd reason. However it's good to have a land line in case of emergencies.

No more trees falling, what does a Eucalypis tree look like? I love that smell...

Eucalyptus trees are tall and straight with peely bark and messy as can be, but a delightful fragrance. I used to park under them around the orange groves in So. Cal. to study between classes. Nostalgia!
