Oops, sorry I misunderstood ya.

I did a little PP on it, just to turn it to B&W and added a slight vignette to it. I then added the texture.

What do you mean? I don't understand the question? you mean the portraits? The formal pictures after the ceremony?
Yeah I guess. I feel after saturday's wedding that I'm a bit pressed for time. Like I don't get enough of the bride and groom together. Especially when we do everything before the ceremony. I don't get how everyone gets these awesome B&G pics before the wedding. Where Is the time? I guess I'm missing somthing. I wanted to start "private time" at 10:30, (wedding at 2) but we didnt' get started till a little after 11.

Chris I have never had one of those stones in my kidney either but I have heard they are HORRIBLE! I had a stone in my gall bladder and I wanted to DIE! It hurt MUCH worse than child birth!

Lisa that link on the PP is soooooooooooo funny!

Jim did you have a hot dog & mac/cheese too? Sounds delicious!

Stephanie the complaint about not enough time with the B&G sounds familiar. I guess it just has to be forced!

Yikes. I never had the pleasure, although I did have gallstones. I recall that being the most pain I've ever endured in my life. I've always been a coward when it comes to medical procedures, but when the doctor told me he was going to cut me open and remove my gall bladder, I was actually relieved. That was 36 years ago, and I still remember the whole thing very vividly.

Thanks everyone. I had one before about 9 years ago; this pain was completely different than the first time.I'm at home for the day trying to rest up and get some sleep. Once my wife gets back with the meds, I'll be good and hopped up for the day. What was frightening was that morphine didn't even begin to touch the pain.

I don't want to sleep too much today though. If I sleep too much, I won't be able to sleep through the night.

Hey Stu!

Stephanie, I think the portraits are almost always rushed. It's the way it is. Rare is the moment it is not. You need to get a family member that can corral people for you. You need to command control. You need to be kind, and ask "anyone else" and when they keep adding and doing, you have to keep smiling. It is the nature of the beast! aka Portrait formals ICK

The night before my last attack, we'd been out to dinner at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, and I'd had lobster. I came home, went to bed, and woke up an hour or two later with very bad pain. I should mention here that Lois' mom was of the generation that believed that a shot or two of booze was the answer to everything. Unfortunately, the only liquor we had in the house was some nondescript (legal) corn liquor that someone had given us as a gift. She gave me a big glass of the corn liquor, and hovered over me till I'd drunk the whole thing.

That put me on the floor. We actually considered calling an ambulance, but decided I'd get to the hospital faster if we drove ourselves. Anyway, when I arrived at the hospital, they thought I was having a heart attack, and they put me in the cardiac emergency ward, and wired me up with all the beeping things. They left me there for about 3 days before they decided there was something else going on.

One thing I've always wondered about: The surgeon told me there would be many foods I couldn't eat after having my gall bladder removed. I haven't found one yet.

Oh wow Chris - that really sucks big time; I feel your pain.

Back in1985 I got up early to begin shooting a wedding on a particular Saturday, and was feeling a bit under the weather. The ache and pain got worse until it was unbearable 15 minutes prior to the ceremony. I left the church and had my wife rush me to the hospital.

Turned out it was a kidney stone attack - I was there for 2 days :(.

I've not found one thing I cannot eat, many I choose not to, I've never had a problem everyone once in a while after the surgery I would feel a chill or coldness where my gall bladder should be, that was very strange, but now nothing, I'm perfect! :-)

The after effects of the surgery (a fairly big deal in 1972) were incredible fatigue that lasted for at least a month, and numbness around the incision. That lasted a couple years.

I remember deciding I wanted to go for a walk one day maybe a week after the operation. I was really restless sitting around the house, and figured there'd be no harm in walking a half block to the mailbox and back home. I made it to the mailbox, and no further. I literally could not pick up one foot and put it in front of the other. I sat down on the curb and waited for someone familiar to come by. A while later, Lois came by on her way home from work, and picked me up. I've never had a feeling of complete exhaution like that since, thank heavens.

I had the laser surgery and everyone said "Oh you'll be up in 3 days" I was so excited to hear that, and expected it. A week later I still needed help off the couch, AND I work out, so I was very sad, it took me a good 3 weeks to get up and around again.

I went to the doctor and told me the people were idiots and that when you cut through a muscle even when it is a small tear, it is hard to just get up and go after that. I was glad to hear that because I was pretty depressed at not being up and at it in 3 days.

I suppose if you know you have the problem and understand how to keep it in check, you're ahead of the game. I had no idea what was causing my attacks except that they were getting progressively worse. I was very happy to have the surgeon slice and dice me.

Funny, but after the surgery, the surgeon announced he had removed my appendix, and freed up some adhesions (whatever they are) while he had me open. I have a mental image of me being splayed wide open with my innards spread out all over the table.:lol:

Anyway, I suppose I'm not quite as apprehensive about surgery as I used to be, although in truth, I've managed to avoid it since then.

you know, I don't think it really is the food that does it, I think the gall bladder dies...OR in my case when I lost weight, the gall bladder basically died because of low fat count in my body being processed at such a rapid rate. Then I ate the chips and it totally spassed out on me, and IT HURT! worse then childbirth.

I gave up fats one day and never went back...stopped eating red meats and never had a drop or hydrogenated oils, I guess my gall bladder was very sad at me. LOL

Hey there young lady - just on the last few minutes of my lunch - thanks for keeping up with the blog.:D

Yesterday was quite a day at the Butler Museum in Youngstown. I only wish my dad was still alive to see the opening. But Jeanne, my brother/his wife, sister and some friends were there for the ceremony, and it was also good to talk to other photographers and artists. It's always interesting to chat with others in the arts, listen to their viewpoints, find out what they're in to.

The real surprise was when they handed out the awards, and my envelope held a check for $1,000. I darn near required new undershorts at that point - 'twas quite a surprise .

Hi Lisa - I'm not sure where it's going at this point, but I will be writing a number of checks for this Saturday's wedding . But Jeanne did say I should save it for some fancy seminar. There IS a nice workshop out at Ghost Ranch in NM, but that sucker is $2995.... bit pricey for my blood.

The other good news is the museum is purchasing the print for their permanent collection, and a private individual also purchased the same framed print. At least it can keep my dad's painting company :D - back in 1977 he got a purchase award for one of his watercolors of - you guessed it - the Cleveland Flats.

Now I just have to re-examine my pathetic pricing structure for "fine art prints." Couple of my friends there said I should have sold it for much more. Well, we live and learn .....

Youngstown always has a special place in my heart, although I'm really not at all familiar with the place.

When we were first married, we lived in King of Prussia, PA. Whenever we could string two weeks vacation together, we would drive to California and back to visit my parents. Hey there Tom - I can certainly understand then how you feel about the place.

I only knew it through my father's trips to the Butler Museum of art when he submitted work to their competitions. I would go with him and roam the galleries while he delivered his and studied the masters.

That whole area was quite the mill town of the old "rust belt." I can see some of the factory remains, and would have loved to have photographed those too back in their heyday. Much of it is closed now, and to get the kind of lighting I like, I'd have to spend several days/mornings there.

But King of Prussian - I recall that.... sounds quite aristocratic.;)

The best thing about K of P was it's location. It was an easy walk to Valley Forge Park, and we did that regularly, especially when the Dogwoods were in bloom. The town itself is no great shakes, and except for the huge mall there, has little to offer. IMHO, it's just part of greater Philadelphia now. 45 years ago, it had some charm, but whatever there was had completely disappeared when we were there a couple yars ago.

I appreciate that Jim - I wish you could have all been there to see ALL of the submissions. There were some pretty spectacular pieces: photo, oil, watercolor, pastel - amazing the talent that this country produces :D.

Stu,

Outstanding and well deserved. Congratulations!

Thanks Jim! I did the conversion in lightroom. It is a preset called B&W low contrast then I just tweek it to my liking.

Ok...another reason to get off my duff and give LR a look see...I really do like your B&W conversion...LR has been loaded on my PC for over a month now...just can't seem to find the time to test drive it :(

It's VERY easy to get started with simple things and as you get used to it, things just seem to fall in place. You really should try it, it is so much easier than Photoshop and the results are fantastic. I will be happy to share all I know (which isn't all that much) with you and help you get going.

Sorry about that stone, Chris. they are horribly painful. When my hubby had one, they had to give him 800mg of Demerol before he stopped carrying on.

Stu that is wonderful and something to add to your profile of life huh. And to think we all knew you when! :-) Jeanne has to be very proud of you!

Youngstown always has a special place in my heart, although I'm really not at all familiar with the place.

When we were first married, we lived in King of Prussia, PA. Whenever we could string two weeks vacation together, we would drive to California and back to visit my parents. We would leave K of P right after work, and make Youngstown our first night's destination. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever seen it in the daylight.

Y-town can be very very scary at night anymore, Everyone is hoping Kelly Pavlik does something to bring Y-town out of it's demise.

Time for another grand baby shot.:D She will be one year old next Sunday.

Beautiful Kathy, just beautiful.

I had mine out on a wednesday, and shot a wedding for my cousin on saturday. Selah was 5 weeks old.

Oh, before I forget to mention this:

I would like to comment on how several of you people seem to very often travel with or go on long auto trips with your spouses. I am amazed at you people and VERY jealous! It must be wonderful to enjoy each others company enough to endure the traffic and road ragers.

My dearly beloved and I traveled 80 miles round trip today. We had one unexpected 20 minute wait for road construction and other than that I think all was pretty normal. Normal as in........I sit in the drivers seat, he tells me how to drive. I have 20/20 vision yet he felt it was necessary to point out every time someone ahead of us put on their brakes, every bicyclist, every child or animal. I travel this same highway to the same store at least 6 times a month but he needed to tell me where to turn. He made comments about how my driving gets on his nerves, I drive too slow, I drive too fast, I ride the brakes, I need to brake sooner, I don't turn my turn signal on soon enough, I tailgate(I do not) and no matter what lane I'm in, I should be in the other one, but yet he didn't want to drive.

It was so much fun, I can not wait until the next time we go cruising together again.......NOT!

I LOVE him very much, but I now know I LOVE him best when he is not in the car with me!

Just got off the phone with my daughter from Missouri who is the Costco girl and she was telling me that they will have a one week "sales tax free" sale beginning Aug. 1 for back to school.

Anyone else have a sale like that where you don't have to pay sales tax?

We don't have a sales tax in Oregon so I usually don't even think about it. She says she will save about $90 on the new laptop she plans on purchasing.

The only place I see that with any regularity is Samy's Camera. They do it a few times a year, and if you pick your opportunities, you can save some real money. I bought My 1D Mk II during one of those sales, and saved over $300 in sales tax.

The obvious tradeoff is to buy online out-of-state, like at B&H. Shipping can get pretty pricey, especially if you have no patience (like me) and have things shipped overnight, so this really is a good deal, even compared to B&H.

We use the card lock places like Pacific Pride because my husband has a business that uses LOTS of fuel.

I went to Idaho last summer and when I pulled into the service station to get gas, no one came out to wait on me. I thought they were closed and left! DUH!

Kathy and Maureen,

Elaine does not like to fly...so, we drive everywhere...she sleeps and I drive. We do take AMTRAK from time to time. This Sunday we are going to NYC on the AMTRAK to meet our son's girlfriend (I've met her but Elaine has not). 3.5 hours up and 3.5 hours back...Elaine will sleep and I will take photos of the countryside. The train leaves DC at 6:20AM and leaves NYC to go home at 9:00PM...long day, but well worth it. I am taking the 5D and the 17-40MM f/4 EF L for some street photography.

Belmondo

I would happily compary the number of hours spent in a car to any of you. Our 2004 Tundra has 100,000 miles on it, and our 2007 Lexus has a couple clicks over 60,000 miles on it. An awful lot of those miles have been running back and forth between here and the San Francisco Bay Area where we still have some business interests.

Lois doesn't like to fly, either and will cling to any excuse that might allow her to avoid it. I don't mind the flying part, but really hate all the hassle of it. When her aunt in New York passed away last year, we flew back so we could be there for the funeral, but ended up buying her car so we could drive home. As soon as we got home, we sold her car, and ate the two prepaid tickets (couldn't cash them in).

I suspect we would ride Amtrak more, but we live on a line that only goes to Los Angeles to the West, and The Southern Route for points east (through Yuma, Tucson, etc.) And then, they only run on alternate days, so scheduing becomes problematic.

My shoot was with a dog, and some of the shots, the dog is sitting and his privates are showing, like normally, yet,,,, well..... do I kinda clone it out? or leave it?

*stop laughing*

Awwww....YOU are never left out! EVER! :-)

I'm very happy about the dentist, about the only thing that has gone good today, the PC was finally pronounced DOA. I tried to start it up 16 times and each time it froze in different spots, so I had an old laptop laying around and I decided to give it a shot, it works, so I uploaded the software and now I will work on it. Till I can get the macprobook.

It's just been THAT kinda day :-)
