yeah I just could not imagine taking this beautiful work of art and put it behind a wall. make it into a closet. But I plan on using it tomorrow I hope. I have a couple ideas, not sure I will have the room I want but I'm sure going to try.

Suzy I'd love to buy a printer like that, what one do you have? I've only seen a few at BH and really the prices are not that bad. I think I like the Epson one the best but of course forgot which one and the number of it.

I have inexpensive Epsons because I have expensive ones in my office that cost too much to run. My 1280 hasn't been on for over a year. I use the RX595 for 5x7's now, and it cost me $100. The quality is good, not better than my C88, which cost me $80. But both require a lot of ink. I can't live without my 4 printers right now. I just do too much stuff all at once.

Okay I was looking at the bigger models that print 16x20's. I will have to figure that out one day of what I want.

Suzy - hate when I run out of ink! For some reason my printer is printing everything very yellow at the moment, but all test prints come out fine. Stupid thing. I only use it for printing cds and dvds really, but it is very annoying.
Lisa - I agree, that's crazy about the window...hope the lighting is great for you tomorrow so you can really use it. We have nothing pretty in our "churches" here - just boring very dark buildings with the ugliest possible interiors.

We have a few of those, some are very scary, old buildings but yet in that there are some amazing things you can find as you walk around and peek in doors.

That would be good but ours are like old asbestos buildings that were transported up on trucks. No architecture, no real decorations, ugly mis-matched furniture LOL Although, I have not taken the time to really poke around to see if there are any hidden treasures!

Lab is cheaper, gas is not. I have 2 picturemates and I print all the 4x6's I need with them. I buy the kits and the cartridges print 3x the number it says. Very nice, costs about $.22 a picture. And Costco will mail the orders to me directly for free. So, I use them sometimes. I did print a few large format on the 1280, but it was so expensive, I decided all large prints go to Costco now. They pring poster size for under $11.

I don't know, I bet it is more, because the ink costs a lot of money and probably the paper also. But it sure would be fun to do.
Someone once printed me a 16x20 I needed something fast for a bridal show and I was very impressed with it. But I don't remember what they used.

LOL I didn't even think about driving as that is so not an option for me here. I have everything sent to me and even with postage I'm still better off - and the new lab I'm using for a lot of things is getting stuff to me in 2 days...which is totally unheard of for my area!

Hi, Jared - looks like you've started something with the textures!

Chris has the right idea.
We're packing tonight getting ready for out trip north in the morning. I had forgotten how much extra work it is taking the cat. We haven't been doing it for a while, and we were a little spoiled. It means packing all the extra things for her 'comfort.' Two litter boxes, lots of yucky cat food, toys, pillows, etc., etc. Not much room left for cameras, even though we're taking a truck. I just drove down to my local gas station, filled it up, and ran it through the car was. $4.49 for regular. It will be more expensive if we wait till we get out of town, and the Bay Area prices will be absolutely brutal. We might get a little relief in Nevada. Whoopee.

Guess what just happened to me? I need friends right now. :(
I started my printer to print a 5x7 and two cartridges were empty. So, I went to my stash and there is no black one! :( I think I'm going to faint. Tomorrow, first thing, I have to visit Staples. I've never not had a cartridge in the box ready to go. I must not be paying enough attention.
I solved that problem Suzy I keep two complete sets on hand as backup...when I drop to one for any color...off to Microcenter to restock...my "float" stock is worth $224.00...8 colors x $14 each x 2 sets :( But the Epson R800 is an awesome printer :)

4:20am here. I'll be on the road in about a half hour.
I really wish I was still in bed, but I want to get up to the Bay Area early enough to get to the camera store in Palo Alto before they close. (I have a $100 rebate I can only spend there.) I have 500 miles and 8 hours on the road to decide what I'm going to spend it on.

Lisa,
I use the EPSON R800...I have had it for 3 years now...paid $400 for it...today it is still $400. It is an awesome printer...I buy bulk paper from COSCO or Red River Papers (online) and they work just fine with EPSON inks. I print up to 8x10 at home and send bigger jobs to www.mpix.com (http://www.mpix.com) If you want to print larger at home then EPSON makes a "big brother" to R800 that will print 14x17 size! The R800 has 8 print heads (two differant blacks...photo/text) and aslo a "glossmer" head that seals the glossy prints with a plastic overlay to make the "waterproof." The inks are archieval and have a 25 year no fade life so they claim. And, each print cartridge is $14! EPSON says you can get 50+ 8x10s from a set of the cartridges depending on the colors and saturation...that's about $2.50 each...and you can sell to your customers for a lot more than that :-)

Hi All,
Neighborhood Clean Up Day all done :) We ended up with four trash trucks and seven crew members...picked up "junk" from 189 homes in two hours! Good guys and they worked hard for us...I gave each one a $20 tip from our HOA and they get salary as well.
I'm heading to the shower and then to my granddaughter's dance recital. Taking the 30D w/17-55MM f/2.8 EF-S IS and the 580EX flash. Will be shooting indoors in a gym...not sure about the lighting...I'm going to throw the 85MM in the bag as well.
Have a fun Saturday all :)

Congrats Stephanie. It's my favorite portrait lens.
I envy Jon for going to Penn today. I am jealous. I just came home from my 8 year old's last soccer game, 95 in the shade. And off to the store and then to the other game at 3:00. I'm going to suffer while Jon sees my dream lenses. So sad. But next time, I'll be free. This was a 2nd make up day for soccer due to all the bad weather we've had, so I thought it was free.

Steph,
I have not had this problem but I have read about here many times here.
Try taking the batteries out...let the camera sit for a couple of minutes...put the batteries back and then try the lens.
Also, gently wipe clean the contacts on the camera and lens...use something that is lint free.
Hope this helps...

Back from my granddaughter's recital. Here is a quick sample. Jules is the three old redhead in the right side of the photo :)
The key to a successful performance is to synchronize the performers... observe how well in sync they all are ;)
No Flash was allowed...I used the 17-55MM f/2.8 on my 30D...ISO 1600.
Did I mention the two trips to the restroom? Young performers do get a tad nervous ;)

Steph - I don't know what cam you are using, but the 20D and 40D have a switch on the back and it has to be in the fully up position (it's the ON) switch, to control everything...I've done this a couple of times and got really frustrated when I couldn't change my apertures. Took me a few minutes to remember to check the switch and sure enough, I had bumped it back a notch.
Congrats on the new lens! I am looking forward to playing with mine in a few weeks!
Jim - how cute is that!

Would I like a look at the 70-200 2.8? Got it. 100-400? Love it - stalwart of my bag. Played a little with the 16-35 II, but I don't see me dropping my Sigma 15-30 for it. Got to handle the XSi and 18-55 IS. The thing weighs less, I'll swear, than my A630. Put the 70-200 2.8 IS on it and I still don't see why people claim you need a grip to balance it. They can't know how you should hold a camera!!! The Canon rep is another long-time Domke fan though (I had my 1D3, 24-70 and 550EX in the F3x. We may have got one of the sales people willing to look at the Domkes. I did come away with a Custom Brackets Digital Pro M, and if anyone else needs a decent soft glasses case, may I sugggest the Lowepro Tasca 20? It'll take a small P&S if you'd rather.

Jon - I haven't seen anything about the Sigma 15-30...what makes it so good? What do you use it for? Can we see some shots? Not that I need more lenses, but I'm always looking for new stuff to try and experiment with!

I don't know that it's a great lens in the L class, but it's around 40% the cost of the 16-55, a tad wider, and does a good enough job. This was on the 5D, no filters. First one I have handy.

Hey Kristin. How are you today?
I am trying to be LAZY:) I took graduation shots yesterday, BORING, and putting their orders together today is just as BORING. I keep getting up from the computer and walking around the house looking for something....don't know what, just something to get away from the grad shots.:D

Hey, Kathy! I can't imagine how dull that would be, but think of the promo and the money it brought it - new toys :)
I don't know what's on my list for today yet...I'm feeling a bit at a loose end here.
Jon - thanks for the image. I love wide images on land, just never seem to do as many as I should. I have the Canon 10-22 and I love it, but that little bit of extra reach on the Sigma is intriguing LOL
L glass is lovely, but it's not something I have to have - plenty of glass out there does a fine job without the price tag :)

So I called teh camera place. And we trouble shot over the phone. Eventually he said 'ok bring it in" (another 20mile drive. Did I mention gas went up a BUNCH last night...) so I get back up there, had to drop the girl's off at MIL's.
IT wasn't on the camera good enough. It wasn't locked in place.

I kind of have the desire for a fisheye lens. I don't know that I would really use it all that much, but I think it would be fun to play with.

Good Morning Tom,
You and bride (and your cat) have a safe and fun trip :)The Eagle has landed. 600 miles later, and we're settling into our usual suite at the Marriott.
The only significant annoyance of the day was two gas stations that cut the pumps off at $50.00. At $4.50 per gallon, the tank was only about 5/8 full. I guess they think we all have 11-gallon tanks.

Going to get the 85mm today. My local place had it for 439.00 and I got them down to 379.00. Which would be about the same as b&H plus next day air shipping. And I can have it today! So that's where I'm going!

It was good, you know it was one of those weddings where nothing mattered but family. The flower girl who screamed because she was in a dress bothered no one, the little ring bearer that did the dash down the aisle and threw the pillow. It did not matter.
What mattered were two people in love getting married and they came to rejoice with them. It was a nice time.
Lack of air conditioning was a problem at both the church and the hall, but really people should have left early, no one cared, they stayed and danced and had a blast.

Ok...total newbie question.
Kristin gave me the "shoot in M mode" talk and I did and I was very pleased. However. That was outside and I applied the sunny 16 rule. (as I will at my session on Tuesday).
I had a last min wedding booked for saturday. Very small, traditional, church wedding. Now I was having a large, traditional church wedding in July so I was going to take some friends to our church and practice...no time for that now.
I'm going to be using the same set up as our friend Jim. I mean its worked well for him so its worth a try. I'm going to put the new 80mm on the xt, and my 17-50 2.8 on the 30d.
As for settings, I know my ISO has got to be high, and I need a fast ss and such, and I'm suppose to be able to use flash. I wish I could go practice. Maybe I can make the rehearsal.

Great shot! I also have and LOVE this lens. Only thing I can tell you is be careful at wide open, the depth is insane and goes soft quick. I am amazed that both of her eyes are that clear at that angle, I have not been that lucky. Also, it tends to want to back focus bad when you focus on the subject then move for composition. Awesome lens though!:D

Steph - my indoor low light stuff is pretty limited compared to others, but I stay in manual mode when I do it. I just looked at some reception stuff I did in a dark room and I was at ISO 1600, bounced the flash off the ceiling (or a wall, but mostly the ceiling and it is about 1 - 2 stories high depending where I was), 17-55 set at f4 most of the time and shutter at 1/60. Obiviously that's not fast enough for coming down the aisle, but you could bump the ISO up and/or the f stop wider to gain more shutter. Or maybe even bump your light up to bounce more. Edit - actually I just looked at the images of the wedding party arriving and I still used those settings and the people are sharp, so maybe that is fast enough LOL
Can't you sneak out to the church during the week in the evening, just to test things? You wouldn't even really need a "model" or just bring your girls!
Lisa - I'll have a look at that one, thanks!
I need a bag to carry around San Francisco with me so am looking at one of the Lowepro backpacks (can't remember what they are called), but I'd also like something bigger to carry everything (well, not *everything*) with me...

Kathy...I wasn't very clear in what I wrote...by "portrait mode" I meant turning the camera 90 degrees so you are holding it vertically...this works well to get full length shots of your subject with the 85MM on the XT. I never use the Canon pre-programed modes on the dial...P or Av or M are the ones I use.

On metering...I use averaging most of the time and spot for backlit subjects.

While we are Q&A...
1. When you do those dreadful 'formals' for weddings, do you do full length shots or just bust shots?
2. Do you carry a ladder with you to any sessions or weddings?
kja

Always a ladder - even for just portrait and family sessions.
Yup, full length and half body and head shots for virtually everything I shoot...even did that for the daycare shoot I did, though it was a little overkill LOL

1. Full length for sure and bust shots if time permits.
2. I have carried a kitchen 3-step ladder on several occasions. Also, at rehearsal I ask if there is a step ladder available...most churches will have one if you need it. I am tall..6' 4"...so a 3-steper works fine for me.

It's the F-1X.
I was more tired than I thought. I closed my eyes for a few minutes, and all of a sudden, it was 3:30AM. Now, I'm wide awake, and can't get back to sleep to save my soul. Good Morning Tom,
The nasty weather continues...we have mean little storm blow through here last night with loads of lightening and high winds. A house two blocks from mine took a direct hit...I was listening on my police scanner...two alarm fire...fire in the walls and floors on every level. Must have come in through the wiring?
Hope you all enjoy your day.
Congrats on the Domke..I bought the F-1X from Jon's friend two months ago...it is my "event" bag as it will hold two cameras w/lenses; 2 or 3 backup lenses; two flash units; and assorted batteries, CF cards, etc.
We are heading out to find breakfast this morning...heading south to Woodbridge looking for a country dive with great deals :) It is way to hot (110 heat index) to try photography this morning and we will get more popup storms this afternoon...thank goodness for A/C :)

I was going to buy that Domke bag from Jon's friend, but when I thought how much that thing was going to weigh, I bought the satchel bag instead. That with 2 cameras with heavy lenses and 1 flash and stuff I'd put in a purse was insane already. I carried it yesterday all day and it killed me. BTW, did Jon make it to Penn Camera, I wonder?

Oh, Jon. I'm sorry you didn't get to see the big lenses. I went to B&H, took the time to walk all the way there from Times Square and they had everything, but the 1DsMkIII and the 200f2, which were the items I wanted to see. But they did have the 300 2.8 and other big white beasts there and I didn't have the time to put them on my 5D. I felt sick. It was so busy that day. Next time, I call ahead and reserve the right to mount those babies on my 5D. It's stupid I didn't go alone. Took everyone with me in my family, which was my first mistake. ;)

Hey Kristin,
I'm probably going to get the airport security bag, just because I'll be travelling a lot more and I'm tired of hauling around 3 bags everywhere I go, UNLESS Jon or Tom have something else they want me to look at?You want a roller, or would a detachable set of wheels be enough? I use a folding Samsonite luggage cart for mine; about 12"x3.5"x1" plus the 2-ish inch wheels when folded.
Steph - my indoor low light stuff is pretty limited compared to others, but I stay in manual mode when I do it. Whatcha thinking :-)Going to be working out of it, or just parking it somewhere at the venue while you carry the stuff you want? If you're working out of it, that's what the Domkes were made for. Unless you have some physically long lenses you take, the F-1x or maybe the F-2 would be good. The F-7 AF is good for the longer lenses.

No, I generally haul in three bags, take my camera, flash and accessories out and IF I need anything else come back to the bags. I take a lot, backups, things I MAY need but never do unless I don't bring it. That kind of stuff
not a lot of big lenses at all

Hey, look, it's 3am and I can't sleep :(
I'm going to get one of the Lowepro Fastpacks to see how I like it. I'll test it out in San Francisco at the end of the month. I need something to carry at least a body and three lenses, but that has pretty easy access. So many bags - I need to find a store in the Bay Area so I can get in there and really try stuff out. The Fastpack won't be big enough for the days/trips I need to carry everything, but I'm hoping it's a good "day out" bag.

I'm up finally, after my 2 hour nap. This 100 degree weather is killing my body. And Tom, I don't know how you do it everyday.
My kids are driving me nuts today. One more week of school.

Suzy,
It is easier for Tom...he doesn't have to put up with the 90%+ humidity we do...I went out this morning with Elaine to Fort Belvoir at 8AM and you could see the moisture rising from the trees already.
Last night we had a lightening strike two blocks from our house...I was listening to my police scanner and it was a two alarm fire...happened about 8:30PM on Grey Fox Lane.
I sitting here in my A/C'ed study printing photos of Jules' recital for my daughter and Elaine. My printer keeps complaining it is out of yellow ink but then it prints the next photo just fine...drain it to the last drop I say :)

I've been going through images from last night and I've got quite a few that I'm really happy with.
I'll be able to show them next month...

Lisa,
I use the EPSON R800...I have had it for 3 years now...paid $400 for it...today it is still $400. EPSON says you can get 50+ 8x10s from a set of the cartridges depending on the colors and saturation...that's about $2.50 each...and you can sell to your customers for a lot more than that :-)
I also use Epson printers. I have the Stylus 2200 and the 2400. Both wide format and beautiful print quality.

No, I generally haul in three bags, take my camera, flash and accessories out and IF I need anything else come back to the bags. I take a lot, backups, things I MAY need but never do unless I don't bring it. That kind of stuff
not a lot of big lenses at all
Sounds like you could a Pelican. The best part..... it has a handle and rolls!!:D

ok, chris, gotcha
Suzy, today was 93, and just about an hour ago, it started to get real dark, so I went outside and watched a cloud formation go over that was very scary. I've been a "spotter" for tornado's before so I knew what to look for and it was not dangerous but looked like at any second it could just start to rotate or form. It brought some rain and cooled it off a bit. My son was playing baseball since 4, I think they love to feel the heat. I love the heat but today was just dangerous to play in.

Ah, bring on the heat. I about froze yesterday here LOL Today is much nicer temp-wise, we even did our early morning walk for the first time in almost a week coz we've been waiting until it heats up! It was nice to watch the sun come up again. Now it's pouring rain so good thing we didn't wait :)
Suzy - he looks like he's working hard in that heat!
I think yesterday was a bad day to be on the computer. I think I need one of these (http://www.hyperdrive.com) now :D

Suzy,
Great action shot! How many cases of water did you and the kids go through yesterday?

Lisa - Pelicans are wonderful but they are tremendously heavy! I never use mine any more, it's been in our shed for over two years. I do have smaller cases by another company - Doskogil or Dosgokil, I can't remember - that I use all the time. They are found in sporting good stores in the gun area. They are TOUGH buggers, have customizable foam inside and are actually lighter than my Pelicans. They are way cheaper than the Pelicans and I would never hesitate to use them instead - they have been fabulous. I have some that are more than ten years old now, still going strong. Just another option to consider...

Funny you should ask. I bought 4 water bottles with ice and a little water. They told the kids not to drink too much as they get sick and throw up. Wish we had some bananas, though. I bought a nice large bottle for me, but everyone drank from it. I didn't have to worry too much because we had a spray bottle with a fan attached we had gotten at Sea World. Made a huge difference for us. It was so hot, even under our umbrellas. Poor little guy did well. The other game was at 3:30 and that was painful. The coach kept yelling to move faster. Yeah, you try. :)
