Grrr, crossed times...lost message...oh well.
Stu - long time no see! Hope you are well.
Lisa, thanks...I still have heaps from the weekend that aren't processed yet and you don't want to know how many from April haven't even really been looked at! I just never seem to have enough time!

WOW!!! :o That was scary - first time I show up in a couple of weeks and you'd think I'd passed gas or something .... the whole thread immediately dies! I knew I was a thread killer but I was not truly aware of the extent of my super powers.
Hi Kristen - yup, I'm going ok. My daughter's bachelorette party is this weekend and the house has been undergoing all manner of prep. My older daughter came in and she's been helping us paint, trim, tidy up. My wife has made it very clear that the house has to be ship shape for guests this Saturday.

Hello there Kathy - wonderful to see you too. I've had one wedding and three bar mitzvah's since 5/17 and have been processing, processing, processing. I feel raw from all my RAW files.

Not much topside stuff...I'm leaving for my vacation in a few weeks so am keeping the schedule light for all the last minute stuff that always happens in my other business LOL

I certainly hope so - I've been practicing my lines: "Yes dear, of course dear, you want what dear, how fast dear, how high do you want me to jump dear, right now dear."
As long as I have those memorized I should be safe.
Sounds like a fun weekend, Stu :)

Ok Leesa, you wanted to see a sample of the recent wedding.... here is a shot then. I'm not really at all fancy like a lot of the really talented folks here with all their PS actions and such. I'm pretty much just a straight photog - kind of a holdover from my college newspaper days.

Hey, I love it, very nice....
I think sometimes I can sometimes rely too much on the PS actions and so on. Very nice.

Thank you Leesa - very kind of you.
This was actually a significant wedding as the young lady was a former classmate of my older daughter. And the lady has a brother whose wedding I shot about 5 or so years ago. And then several years prior to that I photographed the parents, who were on their second marriage.
We are all tied in at the local high school together too, since the mom and I were chaperones on the marching band bus. I love a good marching band. So there is a bit of very warm and pleasant history here.

Yes, they are really very nice and pleasant folks. I had a little troubel balancing the skin. She is quite fair but he is darker complected. If they order the shot I'll probably go back into and do a mild exposure adjustment layer just on his face - but you're right about that.
Well, gotta' run to the basement folks and do a few other things. I won't forget y'all and will periodically pop in.

Back from rehearsal. My solo won't be rehearsed until the dress. This makes me *very* nervous. I think the conductor has bitten off more than we can chew on this one and I'm just hoping that my solo doesn't get cut. I'll be rather upset if that happens as I have told a bunch of friends about it. I think one of the bassoonists was lobbying for it to be cut along with a couple other pieces.
Today was one of those days where you wake up pissed off at the world and in a general malaise. Too much stuff to get done around the house and not enough time to get it done in.

We've had a similar day, and I don't have any bassoonists to blame.
I lost my email first thing, and after spending a half day on it and while ignoring the things I was supposed to be doing. It just started working again. I suspect my ISP.
Then, the TV in the family room died. No symptoms leading up to that...it just died. Fortunately, we have another one in the bedroom that we never watch, so I hauled the bad one to the garage, and installed the bedroom set in its place. Both are good-sized DLP sets, and I think I wrenched my back in the process.
This evening, we got a call on my cell phone from wifey's brother, informing us our home phone wasn't working. We had dial tone, and we could dial out, but people calling us got the "Your call can't be completed as dialed" message. That was worth another half hour on the phone with the phone company, and it now seems to be fixed.
I am now a full day behind on my work, and crabby as can be.
Anyone wanna' mess with me?:evil::evil::evil::lol:

WooHoo! That's great Kristin! And a great idea too!
I made some graduation card inserts about a month ago. They were printed 4 X 6 luster paper from Costco and had 3 different images of the student on them, the students name, and 2008. I figured I might attract a small bit of extra business from these. To my joy, I ended up selling a minimum of 50 cards to 185 students! It was GREAT! Sometimes I think the wording "special" is the attention getter and seller!

Oh, and why 8x10? why not 8x12 so it's native ratio (and way more pleasing for people shots imho)?

just looking at your blog kathy.
How on earth did you get this photo w/o a shadow outline. I'm always getting the shadow outline when I take photos of my kiddos against the wall. Did you have a lighting setup?
http://bp2.blogger.com/_WxkOcWErQt4/SEFuwIf3uTI/AAAAAAAAAJM/T7HVlg3XgBk/s1600-h/MMC-4.jpg
It's easy!:D:D:D:D:D Only took me about 100 shots to figure it out!
All I use is a 580Ex Speedlight mounted on a Stroboframe camera flip bracket(which is not totally necessary, but helpful in reducing shadows) which my camera is also mounted to. The room is quite open with off white walls and a window for some natural light. I turn the flash head completely around so that it is aimed to hit the wall behind me, ETTL and crank the flash power up by 3/4 stop. Try it, it works like a charm! I bounce my flash almost all the time indoors. Straight up, to the left, to the right, behind me......anyway it will go to get the lighting I want. I have found that most times pointing the flash over my shoulder/behind me gives me the most pleasing light.

oh, no reason, Joe said his were 8x10 on 16x20 but there was no way what he was showing us was 16x20 paper. So I just figured it had to be 11x14.
Anything would give me a help I appreciate it!

yeah 8x10 pic on an 11x14 paper I guess is hte best way to describe it.
Something I saw at the Yervant seminar that Joe Bussinick does and shows his clients. I need to get about 20 done that will OUCH a little LOL
Do you have a pic you can show me? An example? I might be able to help you out with it. I have gotten pretty good at expanding canvas/framing for print.

Kathy - I think it just needs to have an expanded canvas behind the image.
So somehow to make an action that will work on vertical and horizontal images both. I can get one or the other to work slick, but not both with a single action. I'm not good at this stuff.
LeesaB
3rd of June 2008 (Tue), 23:33
that does not look like a 16x20, but he kept saying it was
he makes a few of these on nice paper and shows them to clients and lets them touch them and hold them and each one he tells a story, he talks first then after he is done lets them ask questions etc.

Either an expanded canvas OR......for a more sure way of getting the border pretty even at print, you can use the rectangular marquee and put a crop border on it.
Either way it would work and i am sure we could walk her through it, even if she doesn't want to create an action for it, she could do it to each print she wanted.
The only problem with an expanded canvas on an 8 X 10 would be the loss of inches.

Yes, 8 X 12 would be easier. If she goes 8 X 10 the border on the longest sides would have to be bigger to allow for crop. I am pretty clueless about a whole lot of things in Photoshop, but canvas and frames is something I have had to learn. It's pretty simple, if it wasn't I wouldn't know how to do it! LOL:lol:

Yes, it is late where you are. I'll keep bugging you about it though, because I really want to learn how to use textures.
I went out the other day and took a bunch of different textures to actually use for backgrounds on multiple photo cards, I was amazed at what cool stuff I found. We have a lot of heavy equipment and I used all the different colors, rust, screens, grills, gears, tires, windows. I got some pretty good ones. I would be happy to share if anyone wants.

I'll try to get some examples of what I've been doing up here tomorrow evening. I really am having a good time playing with new things. I love to experiment with different photo creations but find it hard to get the time to sit down and play. Every time I think I have a free evening or day, someone needs pictures taken of something! I really can't complain though, it sure helps the finances and hey, I'm living the dream I had to make a living at photography. Now if I could just cut the apron strings at the teaching job.:D I seriously think about it when things get so busy with the photography, but I can't seem to let it go, I have a great retirement and great insurance, steady paycheck.....dang, see I talked myself out of it again!

its to add substance to a feeling or emotion youre tryin to portray in the photo...some photos wont work with textures...although people still try just to say they did it.

That's awesome that your photo biz is going so well. I'm happy with what I've created so far, but really looking forward to putting more time and promotion into it when I return from holidays.
I talked to one of the new celebrants in the area today for quite a long time. She is saying that virtually all of her brides are just having friends snap a few piccies...seems to be the way of things. We'll see how that aspect evolves.

Ok Leesa, you wanted to see a sample of the recent wedding.... here is a shot then. I'm not really at all fancy like a lot of the really talented folks here with all their PS actions and such. I'm pretty much just a straight photog - kind of a holdover from my college newspaper days.

Stu,
Very nice photo indeed! I am with you on actions and the like. I tend to PP only for color, contrast, and sharpness; and I do a lot of cropping. I do have some great B&W conversion actions that I like; but even there I often just use the PSCS2 Chanel Mixer in the monochrome mode and do my own B&W adjustments.

Been there, done that for a period of five years for my daughters. Sold hotdogs at football games for the same time frame...the band got 50% of the profit if we maned the booth. :)

Ok Ive never put a tutorial of some sort together so bare with me.
Ill use this photo as an example.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/2529777185_784a1842b2.jpg
-I started out with my B&W conversion (thats top secret:p)
-Then I open up a texture photo
This photo will usually have some kind of characteristic that stands out. A wrinkle in the paper, or a scratch on glasss. Thats one thing I look for in textures, those flaws, cuz those are what will stand out in the photo.
-I copy texture photo over the original picture and will usually start out with overlay on the blending mode, just to see how it looks. If it looks like most of the characteristics in the paper show well, then I leave it, if its too strong Ill go to soft light blending mode.
-On the other hand if the flaws dont show well I will usually go to blending mode>screen.
When I do this the photo will look off, as if the photo underneath is not showing, worry not young chickadees, I will invert the photo to a negative (ctrl+i).
Youll notice that it will change your texture to a diffferent color, just desaturate or add color by going to Image>adjustments>hue and saturation. From there if you click colorize and scroll the hue bar around youll get the color you want.
-One thing I also try to do is add the texture in areas with low depth of field. It tends to make the texture pop. For example in the photo above, there is a lot of blurred background. another reason why I shoot with low dof.
-Right now the photo should look close to completion. If you want you can sharpen the textured photo some to make the detail pop a lil, too much and it will take away from the original photo. My sharpening is as follows Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp mask (numbers set to Amount-50% Radius- 50%)
-The key now is to look for the right texture, not everything will work with every photo. Youll have to sit back and look at the photo as a whole, stop looking for inperfections, think about what could add to the mood of the photo? If the flaws show up to well again, either switch to soft light blending mode or lower the ocpacity.
-Gotta play with textures to know the characteristics of them, some will make highlights brighter, others will add color, or even change color.
-I sucked at textures when I first started using them, I was just adding them just to say I added a texture, over time I was able to know what kind of texture would look good with certain photos.
Lesson 2 will be when I get back:lol:
Any questions? Ask.

I spent at least an hour on the phone yesterday to see why we weren't getting phone calls. It seemed to be working last night, but this morning, we're back to not getting calls. I called the cable company (we have digital phone service), and they have the wrong phone number on our account. My home phone # is 360-XXXX, and the tech support person says it shows as a 636-XXXX number. The weird part is, she is able to call me using the wrong number. I'm back on hold (40 minutes so far), and they're trying to get it sorted out.
I lost a half day yesterday on stupid problems like this, and I seem to be well on my way to doing it all over again.

The Thread title is GREAT! and fits, since it is all I will talk about for the next 3k posts or so!
DUHNow aren't you all sorry you didn't want anyone but Tom making the move? This way you get customized thread titles. . .
Another question:
i've been using my tamaron 28-75 for esessions and bridals and such
I now have the tamaron 17-50, which i like
So do I continue shooting with the first, or use the new lens at my upcomming bridal sessionWhat focal lengths on the 28-75 are you using for those now? If you're mostly working from 50-75 mm you won't like the 17-50. If you're liking the shorter end of the range, then no reason you can't shift over to the 17-50.
that stinks.
Tom - they can call you at that number because the call never hits the outside(their) world. So of course, it works. It's like an office switchboard, really. Someone from outside calls your "outside" number and it gets mapped to your cable account. Except they bolluxed things up and aren't letting your "outside" number in; they're trying to let the "old" phone company handle it.

With this part its having the texture be a more stronger point of interest, usually I use this kind to portray a scan of an old photograph.
-The texture will be layered on top and little if any will be erased over the original photo.
Some dont like this, they say "too distracting", well fu(n)k them:D Thy dont know nuthin.hah.
Example are two photos, a before and after.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/104/364269203_088819f86a.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3032/2282948613_d2c2a36c8b.jpg
With this I added two different textures over it.
One for the film strip (notice at the top of the second photo the lil slots) and then for the shiney spots. It was pure preference as to the textures I used.
I tried to get a dream like effect with this edit.
As with the first style, copying and pasting is the first step. Blending modes are the same, usually overlay.
With this though, I lowered the ocpacity more , and changed the colors of the original photo slightly using Image>Adjustments>selective color.
With that box up I will change the colors section to black. Click the drop down button and it will be the last one. Then I move the bars around until I get the look i want.
The last bar is to darken the photo all together...so say you move the magenta bar to the left, youll notice all the shadow areas get a nice bright green, but if you move the 'black' bar to the right youll notice it will darken the green to a more acceptable level. Again here, just play with it until you get the look you want.
- With both texture layers at the right ocpacity I want I will then gaussian blur the original photo. Play with the blur levels to get them to what you want. With this one I marqueed my hand, feathered and inversed before I blurred.
This will keep my hand more in focus and blur the rest. Give it a better DOF, artificially created of course:D
Now on other photos Ive done I havent went quite as severe on the gaussian blur, just enought to give it that look. Most vintage photos show age, that included softness, color bleeding, fading, scratches etc etc.
To get a look of the colors bleeding youll first duplicate the photo you want to bleed. Change blending mode to colors. Then add a gaussian blur to that duplicated layer, if you do a severe blur youll see what it does, might not want to go to strong but again, this is what is so fun about textures....freedom!
Third way will be coming up soon.

Okay I think I have to reinstall PS, dang it.
It's giving me trouble now for a week, every time I go to open an image I get an automatic critical shut down notice and that is that, and I try to restart the puter etc, it used to work, but today it did not, UGH. I hate to reinstall and add everything again. Guess I have to.
