View Full Version : Your FAVOURITE sports pic of 2004

Yes, I know, another 'best pic of the year' thread. Instead of your technically best picture, how about the one you simply like to look at more than the others. We all have one picture in our collection that we think of as being our favourite and it isn't always the best shot we have taken.

I only have three of my own pictures framed, on the wall in my study and this is one of them, taken very early in the season. It always reminds me that wet weather motor racing can look good. It is a long way from being my best, but, after a lot of thought, I vote it as my personal favourite of 2004.

Nice shot Kenny.

I think if I had to pick a favorite it would be tough.

To catch this spin that early was real lucky, especially since it was so close to me. I just remembering watching as they danced in tadem towards disaster.

Nice shot Kenny!

I don't do sports often ... and certainly have nothing overly impressive to offer. What the heck ... I'll contribute.

This is about the only event I made it to this year. Some flat track racing at the local fairgrounds. This is the best out of alot of bad shots :) I'll be back next summer to try again!

this one is my favourite of the year - 9 year olds have such intensity!!!

http://www.pbase.com/iagrafx/image/31091215.jpg

this one below is my sentimental favourite, as it shows the ferocity of my younger son - playing up and taking on much bigger kids in an older division to get them through the playoffs. his older brother (#12) comes in to help out.

Some of the shots above are a bit special :D

I've not done too much "proper" sport this year, I've been spending more time doing track days and other more informal events.

Shot below was taken at the Rally Car Day event at Castle Coombe (UK) this year. Guy in black race suit is Keith Murray (Mr. Dialynx to those in the know) who runs the wonderful Audi Quattro visible left on shot. This car is more often seen howling up hillclimbs in the UK.

Anyway, thought the shot showed a good "feel" for track days.

Cheers

Thanks for all your posts folks. What has been interesting is the huge variety of subjects and styles, as well as the excellent quality. I have enjoyed looking at all the contributions and it looks good for 2005.

Being a sports photographer isn't easy. We have to get out there in all weathers and often have a technically difficult job to do as well as pressures for deadlines etc. For me it is the love of motorsport that drives me as much, if not more, than my love of photography and I am sure a lot of you feel the same about your own sports. Keep the passion going, it is what brings in the results.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year and I hope that 2005 brings all the great sports shots you hope for. If we should ever meet up, the first drink at least is on me.

I'm not a big fan of bikes or bike racing, but I was invited to this meeting at Croft last august for free. I don't even know the name of the rider. I just like the way the rider behind looks like he's hunting the leader down.

Littlenose
16th of January 2005 (Sun), 12:52
just so you know... the front rider is Yukio Kagayama, and it looks like Scott Smart who's chasing him down.

I may be biased, but the boys on the green machines done a top job over the season, especially when you realise that their bikes were still so new to them that they still had a lot of standard components in them for the first few races... for instance, the team didn't even have time to take out the ingnition barrel for the first race [or two?]... thus Scott and Glen were the only two riders on the starting grid who had to have a key to ride their bikes ! ... i'll stop now before i waffle too much... Ben, I hope you enjoyed the day out at Croft.

*edit*
I was looking closer, and you can see how Yukio is countersteering.. top pic :D

Hey Roanjohn, nice pic the guy on the right looks like Dr. Johnny Fever from the 80's show WKRP.

I did not know that chess was a sport cool. I have a chess picture too. This is a chess club in a small community that has trouble getting members out. On the day I shot this story there were an odd nuber of players so this guy had to double up.

Greetings from Malaysia! I just found and joined this forum. It may seem a bit too late to post a "best pic of 2004" as we are well into February of 2005, but here's one that I like best.

This was shot during a Formula Nippon race at Sepang International Circuit (http://www.malaysiangp.com.my/), Malaysia in Sept 2004. This was my first shoot after a 13 year break from photography (I was a sports shooter for a Malaysian daily (http://www.thestar.com.my/) after graduation). It assured me that I still had it in me. Now I shoot for a couple of local car and motorsports magazines on a part time basis. Hope you like this! You're welcomed to check out my website below for more of my work.

It was really a moving thing to see.

We had no game for week 5 of the season, and so our AD called around and finally found a team out of Gary Indiana, mind you i'm from northern illinois.

These kids took some shotty busses 3 hours north to come play at our field and we simply murdered them, if you cant tell by the score. Usually when we win a game like that i feel pride, but really i just felt guilt.

We ordered a ton of food and invited them into our cafeteria to eat after the game, based on what happened on the field i thought it would be a very awkwared thing indeed, but then the coach from the other team called in both teams to the 50 yard line and they all kneeled and just gave thanks for being able to play this great sport.

As cheesy as it may be, it was the first time i was taking photographs and almost had a tear in my eye :o . The only thing i wished was that if i could have experienced something like that as a player...oh well, one year too late :D

I'm new to the site as well. This picture was taken high on Mt. Ranier in July 2004. I like how the scale of the mountain can be seen by the bergschrund (large cravasse at the top of a glacier) and the numerous climbers extending into the distance.

First time backon this thread for a while...

WOW Adam, that picture is just _so_ inspiring.

Dito.. i really like the viewpoint you got on Nori ... got any of him backing it into any corners?

And Marauder, i lover the abstract feel to the mustang you've got there!

I like it Tim, you've done a great job of panning and keeping him center frame... but then i'm a bit of a BSB fan... i thought Smarty would have done better after moving to Suzuki Rizla's though.

Top job on starting this thread Kenny... it's a winner !
