I have a Canon S1IS and will be going to a .38 Special concert at a local casino so I am sure the venue will be rather small. I would like to know what settings will give me the best quality pictures, I will NOT be using the flash.

I have not used my S1IS that much and when I have it was always in "Auto" mode, I know that the higher ISo the better for low light so 400 is the highest my S1IS goes up to, now what shutter speed should I use.

If anyone has this camera and has used it at concerts I would appreciate if you can tell me what settings you had best success with.

I have read the manual cover to cover about 3 times but knowing very little about photo taking a lot of it was over my head.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

Set it to Aperture Priority and your widest aperture. And set your metering to Center Spot or Spot AF Point. That along with your highest ISO will give you the fastest possible shutter speed. But expect it to still be too slow. You may even want to take a meter reading when the overall scene is at its brightest ad use those settings on Manual. The brightest areas won't typically vary too much, and you won't be thrown off by varying sized dark areas.

The other thing I'd do is set White Balance to Tungsten. That way you won't have Auto WB fighting with the coloured lights that concerts and stage shows typically use.

In my manual it states "When you set the aperture in the aperture-priority AE mode, the camera automatically selects a shutter speed to match the brightness "

Excuse my lack of knowledge but I haven't used my camera that much. Does the above mean that I set the aperture to f/8.0 in the AE mode and leave the dial on AE while I am shooting my shots? I should also set the ISo to 400, correct?

aperture should be f/2.7 (lowest number = widest aperture) & iso to 400 in priority AE mode.
