Get a lenspen, sounds exterior to the actual mirror or sensor. Take a shot at f22 of a pale subject that fills the frame like a wall or cloudy sky, then we can have a better idea of what you've got.

A lenspen you can use to get the crud off the exterior of your lens or in the eyepiece.

A lenspen...you know of all the items i did NOT buy for cleaning, the lenspen was it!

But, I'll take a shot of a pale sky tonight when I get home - been cloudy for the past couple of days, so I've been unable to get a decent shot...

ok, now when you say f22, you have to remember you're talking to the biggest newbie here since man invented bread and had no idea on what to put in the first sandwich...by that I assume you're saying focus to infinity? or thereabouts...

Sawwwy I missed your birthday Terri! Happy Belated Birthday!!!
No hanging of your head :) you'll get a kink in your neck  and thanks!
Thanks for the greetings all...I leave work, don't get on the laptop at all, come back and 3058934753402 pages have been added...I have had to spend ages playing "catch up"....On the plus side my cleaning kit has allegedly arrived today!!!
Holy smokes! That is a nice MQ from the new kid on the block :D

Just a quick check in before we get going. We're only going half way today (thank heavens) so there's not a huge rush on leaving.

Becky... I think I will take my camera after all. There's a little extra room in the luggage carrier. May as well. :p

Have a good day all. :D
Travel safe, glad you decided to take the camera after all :)

HARM: Sometimes the cameras come with pre-installed dust at no extra charge  mine did.

I have alenspen, but I had it in my purse:rolleyes:and the top came off and it got something on the rubber end..so I cleaned it,

the rubber end that got dirty has a black carbon coating and that is how it cleans the lens, if you still have the cap put it on and twist it 1/2 turn and it will re-coat the lenspen with the carbony stuff and you can clean your lens with it.

Great rants Dan.....but clue me in on what this is. I can't figure it out and I think I've gotten some OCD about it.

I think you mean PNY for that other card. It didn't come with one of those plastic cases like the SanDisk does? That would make me mad if the grooves got all messed up.

It is the end of a ram(not sure of term) used to swab a canon after it is fired. A damp rag is run down the barrel after firing to clan it and extinguish any embers before more powder is introduced.

Yes PNY and it came with the little plastic cover which got tossed in a drawer with the rest of them. I prefer to throw a bunch of cards in my right pocket when shooting. As I fill them up I put the full ones in my left pocket.

I've owned an XT, a 30D and a 40D and have yet to do anything but use a rocket blower on any of them.Wow that is pretty lucky.

I suspect mine came with some of that free dust also. And when I went walking in a brook the other day, i must have dislogded some on the inside that stuck on the inside of the eyepiece for when I am taking shots...that will be a bitch to clean if it won't go away with a rocketblower!

Besides, if i do a decent enough job, it'll be better than when it was new!

I've only had the camera a month, well, less than, and it has a couple of specs of dust in there. So i need to clean the sensor (yes, i read all the posts!), is the mirror easy to clean? and what about that eyepiece you look through? It seems that has a couple of specs of dust on it too....my task this weekend will be to pimp up the camera...

I thought the 40D has a sensor cleaner installed.

ok, now when you say f22, you have to remember you're talking to the biggest newbie here since man invented bread and had no idea on what to put in the first sandwich...by that I assume you're saying focus to infinity? or thereabouts...

f/22 is the aperature setting. The smaller apertures will let you see sensor slurm, like in Gail's shot above.

Think of aperature settings as fractions 1/4 is smaller than 1/2...the larger the number for your aperature, or f-stop thus f/22 the smaller the opening.

Besides showing sensor slurm this is useful for exposures. Many of us have and recommend Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure LINKY (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212686696&sr=8-1)

You are correct on the cleaning rod and Curt does the same thing with the plastic covers and his CF cards.

First I try the rocket blower but it really never works for more than just the merest speck...

so I use this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/480240-REG/Visible_Dust_2863182_1_Arctic_Butterfly_724_with.h tml

If it gets dirty, it can be cleaned with regular rubbing alcohol and re-used over and over. It's expensive though. But we don't have to keep buying bottles of eclipse either.

I don't like wet cleaners. Some people use the lenspen sensorklear. I have one of those too but prefer the job the arctic butterfly does.

Harm, please do a step by step for me.I think.or rather, am sure I am doing it wrong:confused:

Ha, you're asking someone who has never done it before to write a guide out for you? You're crazier than me!

I thought the 40D has a sensor cleaner installed.

Yes, but unless I am mistaken, it is an ultrasonic vibration to remove anything from the sensor - anything that is very much stuck on there would need to be wet cleaned, but even with a sensor cleaner, the dust specs would still remain inside the body, which means more of a chance to go back onto the sensor.

But I could be wrong, so I need to do what you all say, and take a shot of something pale at f/22 to see if the sensor is clean (although I did look in there last night with a bright light and it looks like it needs a clean!) or if it is just the mirror and they eyepiece that need the clean.

f/22 is the aperature setting. The smaller apertures will let you see sensor slurm, like in Gail's shot above.

Think of aperature settings as fractions 1/4 is smaller than 1/2...the larger the number for your aperature, or f-stop thus f/22 the smaller the opening.

If I were allowed in here: there just might be a bar brawl twix and tween me and thee. But alas I got Bounced out so.......I don't know Jaime....how does that 'ol saying go? I make love, not war. :p  with the wife only!!!!

It is the end of a ram(not sure of term) used to swab a canon after it is fired. A damp rag is run down the barrel after firing to clan it and extinguish any embers before more powder is introduced.Oh....I know what you're talking about. That does make sense.

Yes PNY and it came with the little plastic cover which got tossed in a drawer with the rest of them. I prefer to throw a bunch of cards in my right pocket when shooting. As I fill them up I put the full ones in my left pocket. You are a lot more confident than me....if I carry any cards in my pocket, I always use those little covers. I don't want anything to get near those little holes and then pushed in when inserting into the camera....could mess up the card if not the camera with FOD.

I thought the 40D has a sensor cleaner installed. It has a sensor shaker...not really a cleaner per say. It doesn't get all the gunk off mine, the rocket blower does the rest.

No jim is the one that has birthdays one a week. Didn't he count and decided he was 80? So we had to start having reverse birthdays. You guys pulled this out the wrong way. I was defending the Dragon.Did I miss Jim's Un-Birthday again!?!?!

wow, I just read that both CA and WA have passed the hands free driving (goes into effect July 1 2008) so if Dan wants to talk on the phone in the car in those states, he'll HAVE to buy an earbud :lol::lol:He could always just use the speaker phone or use the bluetooth capability with a Garmin GPS unit which can double as a telephone speaker.

yes, when i bought it from copperhill, it does ask you to select a bunch of stuff depending on your camera...
I will comment that Copperhill uses all sorts of scary complicated text to make it seem like a much bigger task than it is. They seem to do it to sell more products for lots of money. The product I got from them I was not thrilled with and from their advertising I expected it to be a bit more than it was. To top it off someone on here scratched their sensor using their product. They commented on it and mentioned Copperhill but only to say what they were using not to in anyway blame the company. The owner came on POTN and really sort of attacked the guy. He was rude, condescending, and not someone I would like to do business with. I swore I would never buy another Copperhill product again.

Dang, we're pretty close anyway, lol. We could always go back in, say, December.

How about November? I like to head that way around November. We could meet up there. Or early spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.

I've only had the camera a month, well, less than, and it has a couple of specs of dust in there. So i need to clean the sensor (yes, i read all the posts!), is the mirror easy to clean? and what about that eyepiece you look through?

The dust you see through the viewfinder is most likely on the focus screen in the pentaprism, not on the mirror or in the eyepiece. It's pretty easy to damage those, so when I get dust in there, I just ignore it.

A brief update, just as an aside. . . My academic research indicates that there is no $10 bag to be found anymore.

I'll have to take your word for it. It's been a while since I've done any, uh... Research... *wink, wink*

Thanks for the advice. It has been taken on board!! Although out of curiousity sake - would even a light brush with a SensorSweep (sp?) brush damage it? What about a little air from a rocketblower?

Re: sensor cleaning. I've only had to resort to wet cleaning once, on my 20D. Most of the time the Rocket Blower takes care of the problem for me, but last year I had one real stubborn blob that wouldn't go away until I smeared a swab with some cleaning goop on it over the sensor. I used the stuff from Visible Dust (http://www.visibledust.com/) because Athena recommended it. Worked for me.

BTW, my 20D also came with factory installed dust.

I'm not sure what a SensorSweep brush is. But, if it's soft, it probably wouldn't hurt.

Blasting the inside of your camera with a Rocket Blower while the shutter is closed is very likely to permanently damage your shutter curtains, though. You don't want to do that. If you're going to try to blast the dust off the focus screen with a Rocket, at least put the camera into sensor cleaning mode so the shutter is open.
