I couldn't find a picture of the one I wanted to post, though it would have been within a hundred feet of the one I posted. Apparently I never took a shot of it. It's on the summit of Mount San Antonio (usually called Mount Baldy). It's huge, and has been built up over the years by many people. Every rock in the pile has someone's name written on it with their birth date and date of death below. It's a memorial cairn. It's very interesting.
That is very interesting!

Hullo Cat,Jim,Lisa,Jamie :)

The hummingbirds have finally noticed the feeder I put on the balcony a few weeks ago. I was on the balcony reading an hour ago and I heard one arrive. It even hovered about a foot in front of my face for a few seconds, looking at me. I'm not sure if he was checking me out or saying thank you...

G'mae all.

Been busy ... Still working on old pictures.

Oh, I managed to get into the beta of Aviary, an online image editing/processing/analysis suite. Pretty cool, only 2 tools available, One of which is very interesting... some folks have made some pretty neat stuff with it. Works by linking together a bunch of units to come up with a final canvas. The tool is called Peacock (http://a.viary.com/blog/peacock).

Weird thing is, is that the horizon is actually level, but the building on the right is leaning in...issues with the 17-85mm kit lens?

Oh and they were filming "The Surrogates" in town earlier this week

It's barrel distortion caused by the wide angle.

I got it a couple weeks ago when I commented on one of Dan's drawings.

Maybe it happened while I was traveling, and I missed it...

And who is this favorite notable? Which cemetery?

Henry Bigler (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=bigler&GSfn=henry&GSbyrel=in&GSdyrel=in&GSst=47&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=51650&), and in the Saint George City Cemetery.

Bigler was a member of the infamous Mormon Battalion. My friend Suzi in Northern California loaned me about 20 books back in April. I just finished reading the one about the Mormon Battalion today. Anyway, after Bigler was discharged from the army, he headed north to what would become Sacramento, to Sutter's fort. His original plan was to get supplies for a trip to Salt Lake City to reunite with his family, but he and several other fellow Mormons decided to spend the winter in California working for Sutter instead, so they could have some money to go home with.

Bigler ended up being assigned to James Marshall who was building a sawmill for Sutter on the American River's South Fork. He was there when Marshall discovered gold in the mill's tailrace, and boom... California was on the map in a big way!

Nobody really knew the exact date that the gold discovery happened until many years later when Bigler's diary was found and this entry, dated Monday, January 24, 1848, was discovered:

This day some kind of mettle was found in the tail race that looks like goald first discovered by James Martial, the Boss of the mill.
