What is the real reason for the white L glass? Is it just to designate them from others? Or is there a real reason?

I've read that it has to do with reflecting the heat on thoses sunny hot days...

some will say that it is for marketing ... but i was told by a professor of mine (bruce warren) that it was because of the reflective factor - glass will warp under extreme heat

then why not use white for all of them? even the bodies of the cameras?

The concern for warping is only present in the larger lenses... more specifically those with large chunks of flourite...
I actually think the dimensional changes they were more worried about was the body/tube itself. Expansion and contraction due to heat would move the lens elements inside as well. Thus the larger the lens body... the larger the expansion/flexing under extreme heat.

CDS, "flourite" is made out of wheat flour.
Fluorite is what they make quality lenses out of.

The reason they are white is so that they stand out from Nikon in all of those Canon ads that say, "Now it's Canon". Otherwise it would just a picture of a bunch of black cameras with black lenses....

Or, it's to let everyone know that you have an unhealthy relationship with your spouse...
"I swear honey, that white lens only cost me $299!"

I just wish Canon had made it a truly white lens so that it can be used for custom white balancing. Oh, wait, how will I be able to take a picture of it when it's on the camera? Oops! Forget it. Dumb idea!

And then what? Put it on the floor, step back a couple of feet to shoot it and then look through the viewfinder to find someone walking away with one of you white L lenses?

I'm sure it's a breeze to set white balnce at Sporting events.. just aim at the 600mm f/4L on the other side of the feild and your all set :)

Good point. Maybe my idea about the pure white L lens wasn't such a dumb idea after all. OK, who's game with me on writing a petition to Canon to have that done?

Well I read a study and the difference between white and black was 3 degrees. Maybe lenses are different but I seriously doubt a white lens will make that big of a difference.

We all know the real reason they have white lenses... The whole multi colored rainbow lens thing didn't work out back in the 60s...
