I've always been curious just how a photographer gets a credential to be on the field/court for a pro or major college sporting event. I'm not asking because I want to do it, I'm just curious how it is done. Thanks.

I don't know how it works in the US but in Australia most photographers that cover sport/court work for newspapers or news agencies..I know when I worked for a newspaper the Editor and Chief Photographer would send in a list of our photographers to the relevant people,,sporting organisations, emergency services etc..ID with a photo was sent in and the organisation's ID was returned allowing the photographer to cover the story/event etc..

Work for a paper and be an assistant or main photo editor...I know this because I do work for the school paper, and when my photo editor called me up, he gave me his pass. i therefore went by his name while I was inside the baseball field. The next day i saw one of his assistants there, and he had a pass with his name on it.
