Do any of you use file renaming software?? If so which one?

My problem that I have found is this. I want to rename the files after I sort and process the keepers HOWEVER I also want to continue the numbering scheme from the end of shoot 1 to the beginning of shoot 2.

In other words.
I take 1300 photos at a baseball game, out of those 1300 I have 200 keepers that get processed. File 1 = mb000001
Next day I take 1000 photos at a track meet and have another 200 keepers. File 1 = mb000201 I want to be able to do that without manually going in there and figuring out what number my previous file stopped at and where my new files need to begin.

Hope that is clear and I hope someone can help.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark - hmmmm.... not sure if there's some automatic way of doing that with some standalone application. I use the rename feature in ACR for my wedding and event work. You define a start point and name the first file, it does the job, but then you'd have to remember where you left off if you wanted to start right up with the next job.

I go by client name as part of the name convention. That makes it pretty easy. You could go by date maybe? - Stu

Np - just the acronym for Adobe Camera RAW which is one of the components that comes in CS3, along with Bridge. Bridge is a visual file viewer and I use it to sort through and work on my RAW files. When I'm done with global exposure adjustments I can select via Bridge which files I want renamed.

Ahh I see... I have CS3 I just havent braved it yet. I am still using CS2 and I do have lightroom as well which I like for some of the automated processes. How much different is CS3 than 2?? Is it worth the install for some things it does vs. CS2?

Yes it is, especially since it will let you work on the 40D RAW files that CS2 won't. Just get the latest ACR update once you install it. As far as differences, if you're comfortable with CS2, you'll be right at home in CS3.

For your original question, as long as you don't batch rename any files between shoots, Bridge keeps last number used +1 as the default each time you open it. ie. You do 200 shots today and rename them. Then 200 more tomorrow. When you open the batch rename dialog tomorrow, it will start at 201.

Another gread thing about ACR in CS3 is the highlight recovery function. You can really bring back pixels to a great degree that you thought had been lost in blown highlights. That's really great for bright white wedding gowns in in bright sunlight.

You can also open raw files in photoshop and "operate" on them just as you do with JPG's, TIFF's, etc.

Without fully understanding your reasoning for all this I have two suggestions:

Bulk Rename Utility (http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php) is a great free program that may dow what you want.

You may want to look at Breeze Downloader Pro and Browser.

Lightroom is a breeze at doing that...

I use "ReNamer". Thare are several naming options, but you just have to tell it what you want to start at and it will go from there. I dont think it is automatic.

And its free. Check it out.... http://www.snapfiles.com/get/denrenamer.html

I'm not aware that what you're asking can be done in Adobe Bridge but it certainly can be done with the Batch Rename function in BreezeBrowser Pro (http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/). Simply enable the "Continue number from last time" field and it will remember the last used file number and increment it the next time you use the Batch Rename tool.

Unfortunately BBPro isn't free but you can download it and try it out for 15 days and see if it meets your needs. I have no doubt that if you work with large numbers of files you will find it very useful; the software is designed to replace Canon's supplied software...the code complies with the Canon SDK and is optimized for Canon cameras. BBPro combines all the functions of the separate Canon software tools into one package.

Bridge works the same way. It always starts from the last number used.

CKrename is free and can 'batch' by highlighted groups in the same folder.

You're right about that...I've never explored that functionality in Bridge before but I just tested it and it increments the last used number if you use a sequence number as a file name suffix.

+1 for ReNamer, haven't tried the others, happen to stumble upon this a while ago and it's done all I needed

RNAME is another free one that works well and can also replace, and add to file names?
