Sounds like a good idea! :)

You've got some pretty good photos in that gallery already, so if getting the 100-400L is an upgrade, i can just imagine what your photos would be!

I use that lens for windsurfing shots...similar enough, I guess. :)

Thanks, What difference between 400mm and 100 - 400mm? What is best?

Great choice, as I use for windsurf, kiteboarding and surfing...and many othe subjects.

providing you have good light, you wont regret.

I've owned both the 100-400 and the 400 5.6. I'd skip the 1-4, as it was pretty soft at 400 and wide open, which was where I had it 95% of the time. The prime is WAY sharper, and will save you about $400 too.

Ditto. When I went to the 400 f5.6 I had about 90% more in focus shots.

My 100-400 was hit and miss with focussing on the 350D...however, the upgrade to the 40D was unbelievable...90% in focus using A1 servo. I can't wait to get out this weekend and take some more shots.

My personal choice is the 400 2.8 w/ 1.4, but i am going to assume that is a touch out of your price range if you are looking at the 100-400. I would also suggest going for the 400 prime instead of the zoom.

the 400 5.6 prime is much better compared with the 100-400

minimum of 400mm and ideal at 600mm

"Better" is always a matter of opinion and the final test is results on screen or in print.
The photos above were taken with the 1-4 zoom and look pretty good to me. The prime's IQ is better for sure, but the zoom is more flexible and you may get shots you would have missed with the prime...
Go with your wallet and your gut.

pmdcm...so you have both?

ok, thanks for the info.

The 400 mm is better than 100 - 400 and less expensive too.

My budget for now is $1,400 for the lens and i like an 1.4x extensor more later.

What are you think about that?

Only if you have lousy 100-400L. I had both and they are quite similar in IQ. Now AF on prime is much faster.

I've seen really nice photo's with both lenses, but i've only used the prime. As much as i love this lens, it has put me too close on a couple of occasions, and i've wished i had the 100-400 (but only a couple of occasions, so i can live with that).

As for the extender... What camera do you have? I have a 350D and find manual focusing a real pain! Very hit and miss.

You will have to use manual focus if you had the 1.4x TC to the 100-400 or the 400 prime because it will cut the light coming through the lens and auto focus doesn't work.

What about Sigma 120-300 w/1.4x (420 f/4 autofocus) or even a 2x (600mm, f/5.6 autofocus)? Focus can sometimes be a little slow with the 2x.

OOPS! That would bust your budget. Sorry.

Hi Scott,

I have been testing my new 40D...just amazing speed (fps) compared to the 350D, and focussing is spot on too.

Actually I will take 400mm f5.6 or the 100-400L over Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 and 1.4xTC. 400mm f5.6 is super sharp and AF is much faster than sigma 120-300mm f2.8.

With 400mm f5.6 you can use tamron 1.4xTC and still get very good results.

Damnit! Don't you start, it's bad enough with Roy rubbing it in!!!!

You'll still have to manually focus the 40D with the extenders; have you tried manually focusing with it yet? The 350D is a pain as the viewfinder is so small.. I haven't tried the 40D yet, so have no idea if you'll have problems with it or not!?!
