This was my first serious attempt at taking a nice photo... rather than just getting snap happy with my 10D.

Thanks for all the feedback. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best value for money lenses for these type of shots. I really enjoy doing portrait shots, and capturing the facial expressions.

I have been looking at some of the IS lenses, as I like to capture the moment as it occurs rather than manufacturing a pose. Consequently, I figured that the IS would give me a bit of added flexibility when not always having the time to ensure a stable platform.

Can any portrait pros tell me if IS is of any benefit in these sorts of situations. Also has anyone used the new 75 - 300 DO lense for portrait stuff.

What a cute shot. I guess IS would help as long as the subject doesn't move around. It would help you keep your end steadier. I would think a faster lens would be better for capturing the moment plus give you better control over the DOF and get the background blured out more to make the subject pop out more. I want both, I would love to get my hands on the 70-200 2.8 IS. :)
