Seems it hasn't been too long ago they did a major server upgrade now they are contemplating yet another. For the past few months the site has had major issues with slowness due to congestion they claim.
I really like the site for hosting photos but there leaves a lot to be desired for their ability to keep the site running smoothly. The Search feature has been broken for quite some time now and after many inquires I have made to get a response, we're working on it.

Most of the problems lie with the fact that the user base is growing faster than they anticipated. I believe they are doing their best, but are simply overwhelmed. There is hope for the future.
My wife uses PBase to post some of her photos, and is very pleased overall.

Nope....PBase has been very good to me over the years. Slug had no idea this thing would grow to the level that is has when he originally set it up. They are scrambling to keep the photo servers the fastest in the business as a result of their popularity. Yes...they have growing pains, but I haven't seen anything better for basic photo hosting.

I can't imagine how many users there are, but I browse pBase quite a bit. It's definitely the best place to see real-life samples of various lenses.
I'd post images there, but the subscription prices are a tad high for me. :(

23 bucks a year is expensive?

Is that all it is? I had never thought about them for hosting...
I guess some people aren't happy unless it is free :lol:

I have nearly 4000 images there....and room for plenty more for my 23 bucks.

I have no plans to take my personal site away from Pbase. i have no issues with their service and my site always seems to be up and running without a hitch.

That is a joke right?

No kidding. and they also raised the storage amount from 400 to 500 MB without a change in price.

I have been using PBase for almost four years, and have been generally happy with it.
Lately though, it seems that when I link an image, it soon transforms into an X.
Any ideas?

You are linking in the wrong format....if you see i.pbase.com in your link then it isn't valid. That is the upload server and images are only transitional there. The correct format for any pbase link is this....[xurl]http://www.pbase.com/your_user_name_here/image/image_number.jpg[/url]

Thanks Dan.
Apparently, I have incorrectly been right-clicking the image, going to properties and copying the URL there ... which has been the transitional upload server you referred to.
I found this article at the PBaseWiki, which was helpful too

The easiest way is to go to your gallery....click on the thumbnail and then select the size view you wish to share...small, medium, large or original...then copy that directly from the address bar...paste that on the photo link and add the .jpg extension...hit enter and you are good to go.

Let's see...Flickr is $25/year UNLIMITED and pBase is...

If you only store postage stamps, pBase is fine. I happen to like Flickr's interface and price better. Flickr is also running a 2-year subscription for $48, still unlimited. I hit the 100MB flickr free account limits pretty fast, and faced the move to a pay account. Flickr was $1 per year higher for infinitely larger space and more attractive interface. I like the ability to find images by lenses/bodies, but pBase is too high if you store full-res shots as I often do in Flickr.
So for what I wanted, yes it was too expensive and not $23/year.
Infinite >>>> 500MB :-P

ROFL....I don't have time to wait for Flickr and their tiny little postage stamp images to load. Flickr has a clumsy interface that is a nightmare for visitors to try to navigate. But hey...if it meets your needs...jump on it.

I've never had any notable lag on flickr, even at work where the 'net access SUX (1/2 T1 shared over 15+ computers). At home its always lightning fast. I do however see occacional lag and script crashes on pBase everywhere I use it. But as you say, to each his/her own. ;)

The only problem I've had with my pbase page is sometimes it's slow to do some stuff, otherwise it's been great. I have gotten lots of hits and comments. I do wish I could do the smugmug so I can charge for prints, but I don't feel like dealing with the pricing with not knowing if any of my stuff would sell to anyone but my grandparents! I also don't want to have to claim it on my taxes if it's only family buying the prints. I can just print them myself and charge them if they want prints.

I hosted pictures on PBase for a year and hated it. The interface is pretty archaic, the customer support is marginal and the reliability is spotty.
The final straw for me was when PBase was essentially down, the owners were gone for a week or two at Burning Man, and the guy they left in charge had no idea how to fix whatever was broken. So users were left with a service that was down more than it was up, and there was nothing anyone could do about it until the owners got back from vacation. I only host pictures to share for family and friends, but for people that use services like PBase as a portfolio for customers, that kind of service isn't acceptable IMO.
gardengirl13, if you don't mark up the prices on prints you don't make a profit, so you wouldn't have to pay taxes. Or you could just have your family tell you which pictures they want printed and you could order them yourself, in which case you get charged the regular price. Just a thought. :)
I migrated from PBase to SmugMug and have been very happy. Great support and they're constantly working to make the service better and more competitive.

Interesting...I have had a paid account on pbase for over 5 years now and have yet to experience an outage of more than a couple hours. For an inexpensive photo host for most situations, it is hard to beat. It still loads images way faster than Smugmug or Flickr....and you actually have some options as far as sizing your images for display.

I still use Pbase for my personal site for friends and family, but I use SmugMug for my business images. Neither one is perfect IMO. If I could merge some features from one site to the other that would be great. But Pbase has been a little slow lately and they have yet to offer the printing they have been saying they are going to add. They could kick it up a notch!

This was in August 2006, I found a couple threads on their forums about it.

I can't say I notice much of a speed difference between any of them, but I could just be hitting their data centers from a better location.
Either way, its nice that we have so many photo hosting options out there.

PBase and their lack of customer support dealing with on going issues is becoming a joke. Unless they fix things before my hosting payment is due I will most likely take my business elsewhere.
