I have had my Canon A40 for about a month and a half. I did not know how to use it very well at first but now i am using the manual mode which is ver good!. The only problem that I have is that in manual mode you always have to use a flash otherwise the picture is black. Is there a way to use the 1/1500 shutter speed and not use flash? because i want to take pictures at like plays and such and do not want to always have flash ANY HELP would be apprecaited!!!

What you need to do is search out some basic photography tips. The faster the shutter speed you use the more light is required. The Slower the shutter speed the longer the exposure and the morlight that gets to the image sensor.
Check out this for starters. http://www.dcviews.com/tutors.htm

If the subject is well lit, for example a light-bulb, it's ok.
