Finally got all the pieces together. A few obligatory rolling shots of my second rig attempt (Suction based), after my first rig (magnet based) was a complete waste of money and time.
I'll come back tomorrow with some obligatory shots of the rig itself.
Anyhow... 3 pics... My first ever attempt of shooting with a rig.
C&C are welcome and appreciated. :)

good job (it's about time! :p), now it's time to invest in the 10-22mm or 10-20mm :)

Nice man! I can't wait to get my rig complete. I might not be done till next week. I'm going to have an exhaust shop weld a couple things together for me.

???
He has the 10-22mm... And those shots even look like they were taken with that lens.

What caused the magnetic based system to be a failure?
Magnets not strong enough.
Vibrations or wind loading causing magnet 'creep' or movementJust curious as I have thought of using some MagSwitch (http://magswitch.com.au/usa/products/woodworking/magsquares) magnets to make a rig for still and video use.

Thanks guys :)
Yes, it was shot with a 10-22. I would have liked to use the 17-55 f2.8 IS but couldn't get the whole car in at 17mm. Extending the pole generated too much bounce to my liking and since I was by myself, I could either be behind the wheel or balancing the camera... but not manning both spots ;)
I'm planning on giving this another shot with the aid of a buddy of mine. It will make it easier to control the bounce. 'behind the scene shots' have been posted in the DIY thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=490505)

Thanks Frank :) I was counting on the twilight time to allow me nice long exposures without the need to go beyond f/16. :)
I wish I could avoid the tree reflections in shots 2 and 3, but unfortunately I didn't have another spot to shoot last night. :(

Even though using 4 x 200lb rated pull magnets, i couldn't get a good enough grab. It just wouldn't hold the rig, let alone when the camera was mounted on it. I find that a lot of modern cars have too many under-body wind panels to bring down drag. Of course one could remove them, but imo it's just too much work. If you are looking to go with the under-body route, plan on getting a few clamps as well. You will find out that the magnets are more for support and stability than for grabbing. The latter is achieved by clamping the rig to the car.
Good luck.
