In case you have missed this one http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51227

One of the great things about computers and databases is that you can access any type of info filtered in many ways. This board allows you to do the many types of searches. I used one of the search filters prioritize the board by "views since the inception of the forum". The aforementioned thread is the 43rd most viewed (not counting the 3 stickies) "EOS Cameras" thread since the board began. It shows now signs of dying.

This has been one hell of a welcome for a new member. Could it be the avatar? Could it be the name? Could it be the camera? The analogy that comes to my mind is Christy Brinkley riding past Clark Grizzwald (sp?) in the red Farrari in National Lampoon's Vacation 8-) This package has seemed to stirred the male members of this board. It seems as though the ladies are standing off to the side watching all of us. Someone even bumped the thread because it was going to fall from the 1st page of the board. The other thing I noticed is the length of the replies. We are some chatty fellows aren't we? Some things that make you say Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Just an observation............Merry Christmas everyone.
Cheers,
Rob

LOL
I was wondering the same thing myself :) :)
I meant to have another look and see what the conversation was about-was it still on subject or not

Wow, the thread was moved in less than 10 minutes. I thought that would happen. I was hoping the Mods would tolerate the post for just a little while. I guess this won't be the 43rd most viewed thread anytime soon
Cheers & Merry Christmas,
Rob

I think it is either of these two.

It is a fact that there are far less female photographers on the board, and when one comes by, there is a sense of shock & awe.

My other guess is that the forum is browsed by a bunch of dirty old men with big imaginations :D

The aforementioned thread is the 43rd most viewed ... since the board began. It shows now signs of dying. That's because this forum is full of testosterone charged males... Having a new member of the softer sex grace our humble abode is a major deal.

That's because this forum is full of testosterone charged males... Having a new member of the softer sex grace our humble abode is a major deal.

This thread also reminds me of a John Stossel 20/20 Special I saw a few years ago. The premise of the show was to investigate wheather "attractive" people are treated differently. One of the set ups was to have a very attractive woman appear to have a flat on the side of the road. The flip was to have an "average" looking woman in the same situation. Some people stopped for the "average" woman (men and women) while the cars were stacked up on the shoulder (men) to help the "very attractive" woman. Its all about the Avatar.

I hope that Cricket does not take this the wrong way if she sees this. This is not about her (I hope that all of the assumptions that we all have made are true). She is what she is and men are men. It is all about testosterone. That is what I always tell my wife. I just think it is funny.
Cheers,
Rob

It's a problem sometimes. We had a female member a while back who briefly used a photo of herself in a bikini as an avatar. She is apparently a fitness buff, and her husband is a serious body builder. The avatar apparently was more than some of the male members could handle, and their reactions were embarrassing, if not outright disgraceful.

Shortly after that, she dropped her avatar and eventually drifted away from the forum altogether. Before that happened, I had an opportunikty to meet her in person---she bought one of my 10Ds. She was a bright young woman, enthusiastic about photography, and would have been a valuable member of the forum. I'm sure she was made to feel very uncomfortable by a couple drooling neanderthals who felt some need to treat her disrespectfully.

Nothing was really said about it at the time, but it really wasn't one of the forum's finer moments.

You guys should see the reaction when some girl posts on a firearm forum...

Plus... what's the purpose of showing your bikini picture on a guy forum other than just to tease and get attention?

I do BB too. You don't see my lat spread on the avatar.

Doc:
The obvious response is threefold:
1. This is not a firearm forum.
2. It is not a 'guy' forum.
3. It is a photography forum with members of both sexes.

Who knows? Maybe someone would like seeing your lat spread.

It's all common sense. Nothing more.

I'll just chime in to agree with Belmondo's post, except maybe that part about seeing a picture of Doc's lats;) .

I'll also add that when a thread starts to be more about who, then what, it's time to pick up a camera and take some pictures.

Merry Christmas,
Scott

This is a problem on most internet forums y'know. I think, I might be wrong, that many of the forums are browsed by the umm, lets not beat around the bush, nerds. Not to say everybody is. Lots of the guys here have girlfriends, and good looking ones I might add.

However, as soon as some people seen the word female, they completely forget the fact that there is a person on the other side of the monitor. The shyness factor is lost. I almost never involve myself into threads like that other then a welcome I would give any other person.

The moderators do a great job here, but maybe you guys should change your stance on matters of this nature. I guess I might look at this differently then others. I have always been surrounded with women, I have 7 aunts, 12 female cousins. I spend 1/3 of my time in the gym and am used to seeing lots of pretty women as well. I am comfortable around the opposite sex.

Some of the guys need to get a grip. If you were a teenager, they would laugh it off, but if you are 30 or 40, its becomes weird. I remember what Belmondo is talking about and as he put it, it is somewhat embarrassing.

What would you suggest Mods do differnetly Persian Rice?

Should we treat threads posted by Women differently?
I think you must understand the flaw in that direction.

Anyway.. I would be interested in how you would like to see the stance changed.
PM me if you like.

Personally, I find the juvenile and borderline sexist behavior appalling. When we see rules broken yes, action will be taken,. If anyone ever feels discriminated against, I hope they feel welcome to contact a MOD asap! But beyond that,. the mods are not going to be driven into being discriminatory towards certain threads simply because others are.

Discrimination on any level is against this forums rules.
However.. I am not at all sure what action can be taken when members flock to the "new girl's" post like lemmings ;)

When you think about it.. the fact that this thread exists is pretty sad in and of itself.

CDS,
I think you are a bit too quick to take the high road here. If you read the posts, the lady gives as well as takes. I have been just a bit fascinated as to why this "Welcome" post was taking on such prominence. I don't think anyone crossed any line. My intention was not to admonish anyone, for there is no one at fault. I was merely making an observation. The thread is what it is, no more no less.
Cheers,
Rob

2. It is not a 'guy' forum.
I may be wrong, but my impression that close to 95 if not 99% of all posting members are male in here.

How many times have you seen: "My husband's gonna be freaked out when he sees the lens bill" ???

Or do you think the male/female ratio is close to equal?

The net amuses me. People take for granted that the person who posts or messages are who they say they are. You may think you are reading a post from a 25 year old stunner, when in fact it is from a 50 year old hairy armed, ex prison inmate turned trucker. My god, wouldn't that give some people sleepless nights.

Still, the number of hits that thread has got does tell you something, not only about the make up of this board, but how it thinks.

What a bummer when you drive 300 miles to meet a bushpig:confused:

WARNING WARNING WARNING

This image isn't for young'ns, but I feel it is fitting for the situation. Forgive me if it is too vulgar.

You have been warned.

Ok, enough with the warnings, show me the picture:

Hey all, I am back from the Holiday, and except for the stunningly bad news about the 9.0 earthquake and all that, my Holiday was great!

You will be happy to hear, I hope, that I am not scared away, or any such thing. I like all of the advice I'm getting. Very Cool

I really am a girl! I tried to dim my avatar down a bit so it wouldn't appear as though I was trying to advertise or whatever. I was going for artsy. I'm an eye person.

I am much more of an artist than a geek, but I have to admit that it was me who stopped the 12:00 from blinking on the family VCR back in the 80's!

I did finally order an "L" series lens! I decided on the 24-70 2.8L because of the wide angle, and I needed a zoom. I am sending a couple of things back.

Take care all!

I'm happy to hear it ... hopefully we can all just move on to "business as usual" ... which generally means friendly and helpful sharing of information.

You people, what is the big deal about that thread being in the first 40? You know there is a thread about a bus that's probably in the top ten. What does that mean? We're all nuts? well...

:o So, uh, I would, uh, like to, you know,uh ......:o

Actually, where does humor cross the line into male libido intoxication?

I didn't think too many of the posts in the intro were bad, but there were some.

The consversation was highly charged at points, and some good, and not so good, humor and statements were used to smooth things.

Must be my age, but good conversation can be had no matter what the sex or age of the particiopants are, without being assumed that every comment is about flirting. Sometimes humor is just humor.
