Some shots from a sequence of the marmalade hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus coming into land on a potentilla flower. Accidently taken in fill flash mode (Tv).

Great shots, very sharp. Which lens did you use? The 105?

Good series, I take it it was hovering in the same spot for a while? I've seen them do it, and if you approach them the right way they'll stay like that unless you move suddenly or come too close. Working distance from my experience is around 25cm, just beyond the reach of my Sigma 150mm lens...pity!

Thanks for the comments :)
SW- was using my sigma 105 (it did have 33mm of ext tubes on but I was not at min focus quite)
Dave- you are right- I don't try to do these shots- just take them when the opportunity arises- this hover was just very lazily flying towards the potentilla in front of my lens.

An incredibly good set of shots.
I take it these are not stacked images?

i have noticed them in one place before also. one i fact was very curious what i was doing and was hovering right in front of the lens looking into it...a shame i didnt get a shot of that ... :-(
i find they hover in place around my parents lime tree that i often visit for macro...
Great shots Brian BTW!
