I don't know exactly where this should go, but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions for a messenger bag that can hold a laptop (my 15" PowerBook), dSLR, some lenses and a few notepads/books. I'm going to be taking both a photojournalism class and a legislative reporting class next semester, and I'll need to have both my laptop and camera with me.
I'm looking at a Tamrac 469 messenger bag, but it's a little pricey for me at the present, so if y'all have any cheaper/more affordable suggestions, that'd be great.

Hi. It's going to be difficult finding one other than the Tamrac. I have the same problem as yours only I have a 17" Powerbook which makes it more difficult. It was difficult enough finding a bag/backpack that would fit just my 17" incher. Even Tamrac doesn't have one that would fit it together with my Canon 10D and accessories. You will have to "bite the bullet" and get the Tamrac or get separates like I did, a Samsonite Sahora and a Tamrac for my DSLR. Its Christmas anyway.

edit-
I am not sure if you've heard of Crumpler (http://www.crumplerusa.com/products/camera.html) bags/backpacks but they do have bags for both DSLR cams and 15 inch notebooks. I am not sure if they are any cheaper than the Tamracs though.

There are two bags I'm looking at, the Tamrac 469 and its apparently cheaper little brother, the 5618. I'm just wondering if my 300D would fit them with a battery grip and how weather-resistant they are.
I currently use a Timbuk2 Commute laptop messenger bag for my laptop, but it's waay too small to fit my 300D and books. I've been using a smaller bag for the 300D, but I've outgrown it since I bought it, thus necessitating a new bag.

I don't know how much you plan to pay for the tamrac, but I have this and it works great.

I have a Lowepro Computrekker AW and it's a nice bag. Fully loaded with all my gear, Notebook and stuff, it weighs about 30lbs. I actually messed up my wrist picking this up a few weeks ago so I've switched to a Domke. Lighter is better. It does hold a bunch of stuff tho.

I have the Tamrac pro 9 backpack, it is only $179.00 and holds a laptop, a Camera body plus these zoom a 70-2100 & a 100-400 - 28-75 - 17-35 & 105 macros and 2x tele extender, plus filters in the main compartment. The outer holds a flash/ambient meter, batteries, media cards and a seperate section for rain gear. It should meet your needs.

I'll put in another vote for the Lowepro Computrekker AW. Very nice bag. I carry my 300D, five lenses, girl friend's G6, various other stuff, and my iBook in it. It's a very nice well priced bag.

How snugly does the camera body fit? Will it hold a 300D with the battery grip, or would I have to take the battery grip off?

I'd also recommend the Tenba DB-17C or DB-15C as it will hold a 17" or 15" laptop respectively. The 17C is tall enough to hold the 10D/w grip and Sigma 120-300mm F2.8EX and 24-70mm F2.8L one on top of the other. Have a look:

I have this bag...Had it for over a year and it is great but now I can't use it anymore, I have a slip disc in my neck and the doctor told me to use rolling bags or give up photography. If you make me a good offer I will sell it to you.

If you're looking for a shoulder bag rather than a backpack then I'll put in a word for the Lowepro Stealth Reporter 600AW or the slightly larger 650AW. Lots of room for the laptop, SLR body and 3/4 lenses, flash, small accessories, books etc, with a very comfortable shoulder strap. Worth a look.

That is the bag that I use. Its my all over electonics bag though. I keep it loaded up with laptop, cameras, ipods and such. Its a larger backpacker style though

Another vote for checking out the Crumpler website. Very high quality manufacturing.
Oh yeah, and if you download the PDF of their catalogue there is an entertaining part where all there products are shown being carried by a model so you can see exactly how big they really look. Entertaining because the bag is the only thing she has covering her in each shot.
