View Full Version : Surfing POTN on the move?

Anyone have any good ideas for surfing the net, and more importantly POTN, on the move?
Don't want to carry a laptop on my four hour commute to work but want to check and post to POTN. Perhaps a Blackberry? Any other choices?

But doesn't that need WiFi? I was hoping to subscribe to a service that I could use on my long train journey.

Not as far as I know. As long as your carrier supports data it will be able to browse off the towers.

Cool thanks, I'll look into that.

Any more ideas anyone?

I got 'unlimited' (sic!) browsing via 02 in my 'Simplicity' pay monthly but no contract package - using my Sony ericcson P990i band works fine, but I wouldn't bother surfin' POTN with it. Too small and fiddly. Rather read a newspaper or summat. If I had 4 hours though I would get a small laptop and hook up that route. I pay £22.50 for lots of minutes and txt and I think the web connection is £7.50 out of that. I use Wayfinder GPS which needs a web connection and it's useful for that.

I use the Verizon XV6800. Works pretty well. When needed, I can attach it to my laptop as well and surf via my laptop (takes a registry hack on the phone), but is great.

I have the iPod Touch (needs WiFi, iPhone has data capability through the AT&T network), but don't like the keyboard because the fact there is no hard buttons to type with.

Oops, well, I don't know if you have it over the UK, as I didn't notice that until after I posted.

I have a Palm Treo, which works quite well for most things. I have a package deal which includes unlimited Data, so that is also nice.

I always browse POTN on my iPhone. Works like a charm! The keyboard is weird to use at first, but after about a day of practice it becomes second nature.

I have a Blackberry, and at first I didn't think I would mess with it much. But, I have found that it is quite handy once you get use to the keyboard and small screen.

Unlimited data in your package is a must.

I have an ipod touch which does need wireless, however the interface is the same as the iphone which does not. Very easy to use the internet, and I love the keyboard.

I use my Nokia E90 on the road, it has quite a nice browser.

iPod Touch for me (when I am in free wifi range). As with the iPhone, it has an outstanding browser for a mobile device.

I also use the iPod Touch and I love it for web browsing. Sometimes I have to make an effort not to take it to class so I'm not distracted. I assume the iPhone would be a good choice for your needs. Only thing I have against the iPod/iPhone is the lack of support for Flash.

You know why there isn't flash support? Because flash is crap. Slows down the iPhone too much :p

POTN browsing is easy on the iPhone, as are most other websites.

Hell I almost booked an entire holiday on my iPhone, it really has replaced my laptop for most on-the-go browsing and such.

Thanks everyone, I've got some nice research to do tomorrow then :D The E90 looks good as it has a proper touchable keyboard which I like.

..and the new iPhone should come out tomorrow as far as I know.

I wonder what POTN would look like on an iPhone, anyone got a photo?

I want the iPod to grab a new atom cpu and freaking evolve so I can get the flash action working! ;)

All HTML sites look almost identical to what they look like in Safari, only smaller. :-P

The resizing algorithm on the iPhone/iPod Touch works beautifully. And most javascript drop-downs and such work very well.

I use my Sony W960i, which isn't too bad.
On O2, so my plan is 1200min, 1000 texts and unlimited internet

It works great with my gmail, and facebook.
But POTN is rather difficult, and don't bother logging in. Just sometimes browse the South-East thread ;)

iPhone 3G (http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/). Sold. :)

Damnit.

The iPhone 3G is a beautiful phone, especially since they cut the price. I hope the plans aren't as ridiculous as they currently are/were with the original. If so I may just convince myself to upgrade!

Shame they didn't make it 32gb as well... they could, but simply didn't want to.

Anybody know the scheduled release date (I heard july something or other) for ver 2.0 of the iPhone/Touch update? They have some images of some of the already developed games and an eBay tracking app and such on apple.com, but I did not see any hard-and-fast date of release.

I could be tempted this time on the iBone. First iteration I thought was poor value, flash-harry over function, but the GPS and on the move web, plus ability to use it as my go-with music machine could solve a number of issues in a single package.

Went into O2 today, £99 on their £30 a month plan or free for more expensive plans. In stores tomorrow.

Dude ... you are the POTN Guinea Piggy for this. If ya get one I expect a decent review. We need to know how decent/usable the GPS is, how stable the web connection is, how stable/listenable the phone connection is, and how cool it makes you look sat on a commuter train most days pretendin' you have lots of txt's to keep looking at so people see you have one and then think you're cool :-)

Umm... now instead of $20 for unlimited data + 200 texts, its $35 for that. I was going to buy an iphone (like 99.99%) but now I am definetly not going to. I can pay $15/month on my family line with verizon or $75/month for at&t. No way thats worth it.

I was willing to do $60/month, but that was my absolute max.

..and lots of shots at f/1.4 and some shots of it flying through the air with AI Servo so the Mark III nuts can pixel peep.

That sucks, I've only had my phone for 3 months. Another 15 months to go ;)

I thought you were just a temporary migrant visitor ... you mean you choose to live here rather than NZ :confused:
