im just getting into photography. I can't decide between rebel and 10d
i know the rebel is the best deal if budget is a concern but how much better is the 10d since its only a little bit more expensive than the rebel?
I was actually willing to cough up a few hundred dollars more for the 20d but i realized how expensive lenses were. Would it be possible to find a 20d with a good lens under $1500?
Is 20d unecessary if i am a beginner? I don't want to be stuck with a camera that i'll grow tired of so soon or get outdated too fast

To me the main advantages of the 10D over the 300D are the stronger body and the dial instead of the buttons on the body. It might be slightly quicker to use, but you can get pics that are just as good out of the rebel.
I got the rebel, and since then i've spent twice as much again on lenses, and more on memory cards, bags, a flash, and batteries, all within about 3 months! It's an expensive hobby but great fun :)

If you are willing to install a "firmware hack", you will get much of the functionality of the 10D in the 300D. Without the hack you will lose some important functions, like FEC. The other major differences are inability to manually select AI Servo and One Shot, and the 10D has a metal body, lack of Custom Functions on the 300D, and the 10D uses 3 circuit boards for what the 300D puts on 1.
IMHO, if the difference in price between the two isn't an issue, get the 10D. I personally am not comfortable with firmware hacks (no flames please, just my opinion) and I prefer metal bodies over plastic. If you need to save money for a lens, buy the 300D. Both will take great pictures.

Scott

This is the best comparison between the 300D and 10D I've seen. Lets you kind of get a good idea what the differences are.

Remember that you can get over $300+ in rebates if you get a 300D and two lenses!!!

as you can see in my signature i own both.
i like the 10D much more then the 300D!
i usualy use the 300D's when weight is a problem or as a backup!
but the 10D is much more solid
IMHO it's better to spend the extra cash on the 10D;)

I went with the 300D. For me the money was the main thing. Also im going to take advantage of the hacked firmware.

To begin? Well, the 300d is way more than just a beginner tool.

People say it does but I have talked to people who sent it to Canon, didn't tell them about the hacked firmware and they fixed it and sent it back.

so basically there's hardly any difference if i got that hack thing correct?

There's a huge difference in terms of functions... especially if you're using flash... etc...
I have 300D... I find myself happily using it. It's rugged enough to withstand everything I put it through and the image quality is the same.
The way I see it, I'll be investing in lenses and my new body would probably be 40D or 50D... Not sooner than that...
But then we all know that accidents happen :D "I walked into a store... "

"i couldn't help it hon . . . i went there just to look and the next thing i knew, i was abducted and forced to purchase all this new stuff . . . "
300D was the right choice for me because i was on a budget . . .
From B&H:
I got the black drebel kit for $970 (it's actually $899 now)
50mm 1.4 USM for $300
$1199 - $230 in rebates = $969 (+shipping) for a Canon EOS and 2 lenses
If you're a beginner and on a budget, this iseems like a helluva deal to get started. . . i think you can purchase before 1/31/05 to qualify for the rebates
my 2 cents

The 10D is black...
No one I know has seen the black Rebel yet. :-)
Seriously; the 10D is a few specs ahead of the
Rebel, and likely will retain its use value better
than the Rebel because of its robust, sturdy
industrial build. It is also marginally better
suited for action shots.

The Black rebel is widely available now. Ritz is even trying to tell everyone they have an exclusive on the black body. Same price!
