View Full Version : Replacement for Rawshooter

I love Rawshooter but now that I have the 40D it won't open the Raw files :( So I am on the hunt for a new raw converter. Are there any that compare to Rawshooter?

I've tired Canon's Digital Photo that came with the camera. But for some reason all photos look soft in that program. I can't tell if a photo is sharp or not. And I don't like the tool interface. Seems limiting and clunky compared to Rawshooter

I also tried rawtherapee, which wasn't bad. At least I can tell if a photo is sharp or not. Unless I missed it somewhere, it doesn't allow you to flag or delete photos. I like to mark all images I've processed so I don't accidentally post process the same file twice.

So is there anything out there that is like Rawshooter ???? Thanks!

Lightroom. If you had a license for Rawshooter premium you could use it for a free copy of Lightroom. Not sure if the offer is still valid though?

Thanks Chris1le for answering. I only have the free version of Rawshooter so no free Lightroom for me. Guess I'll just keep looking. I'm not able to spend $300 on software right now.

Wish I could figure out why photos look sharp in Rawshooter but soft in Canon DPP

Look up Raw therapee (http://www.rawtherapee.com/) It's had a couple of good reviews.

I'll second Raw Therapee. Very full-featured free raw convertor and it works with the 40D.

On another note...does RS convert DNG's? If so, that's path you might try to follow. I know I've occasionally had .... interesting results (read: pictures differed) using dng, but if RS will use them, it lets you keep using your product.

Thank you NorCalAl and Brian for the help. I had downloaded Raw Therapee and it seems ok. Still not quite what I am looking for. But good enough to use in the mean time.

The interface for Bibble 5 looks good. Might download version 4.10 and see how it works.

I want Rawshooter to come back :( but I know that won't be happening.

I also used RawShooter Essentials, as it worked with my 30D files.

I liked RS' working-stage sharpness and detail rendition, but not its muddy color nor the patchy shadows in portraits. So I purchased Bibble Lite and color came up alive and smooth. It needs good sharpening though - I use FocalBlade for that and get the same or better results as with RS plus USM before. Also, Bibble has many more adjustment tools than RS-E had.

If you buy Bibble 4, you are entitled to a free upgrade to ver.5, when released.

The Canon software that comes with the 40D will open up the CR2 files and convert them.

There are those that claim (with some justification) that it's as good a converter for Canon RAW's as anything there is.

Try it - you've already bought it.

THANK YOU for posting this; I've been toying with buying a 40D now that bodies are close to 900. But losing RSE has me frustrated. I've never liked the adobe raw converter; I've liked the workflow (rating) and batch approach to RSE.

I'll give Therapee a shot too.

Yep I know :) I mentioned that I tried it and didn't like it. And I still don't like it. All photos are soft and look out of focus when viewed in DPP. I can open the same exact RAW file (from the XT camera) and it will look sharp in Rawshooter but soft in DPP. I can't assess sharpness in DPP for the 40D files. And it's very frustrating.

I have tried 3 different programs now and still can't find one I like. Guess I will go back and try RawTherapee again.

Normally, I use either ARC or DPP depending on circumstances. I prefer DPP rendering of colours but find the lack of a straightening tool and handling of shadows annoying. I have recently downloaded raw therapee and started playing with it and it looks decent.

One thing to consider with non-destructive editing is that if you want to go back to the edited image or raw 5, 10 years down the track, is the original software that reads your edits still around? This may not be an issue for you but it is something that I worry about. Adobe and Canon are at the end of the spectrum for which the the answer most likely is "yes".

DPP raws may look softer than Rawshooter and that maybe that's just how it is (Rawshooter may apply sharpening to the viewing image or have a default level set) but check in DPP Preferences under Tools, General Settings, that viewing and saving Raw images is set to "High Quality." (the latest version of DPP is 3.4.1, I think the 40D supplied 3.2.something).

I've checked the settings on both and as far as I can tell Rawshooter isn't doing anything upon opening the file. But I'm not 100% sure on that.

Anyway thank you everyone for the help :)

After trying several, I have finally settled upon SilkyPix. So far the photos look great! Everything is sharp and the default setting makes the photos look just as I want before transferring over to photoshop.

Unfortunately I tried the paid version before I knew there was a free version. I hope the free version is just as good. Will try it out before the 15 day trial is up on the paid one.
