Got an A85 for Xmas, my PC running Win XP Pro, does not recognize the camera when I plug in the USB cable, with the camera powered on.

I have followed all the instructions, no joy! when run ZoomBrowser EX get message "No camera was found", tried installing the camera via Scanners and Cameras on the Control Panel, still no joy.

I have searched through the Canon FAQ's, and these forums, can't find anything that works. Any suggestions, should I take it back to the shop?

Heard of this before.

Try unplugging all other USB devices if you can and also try a different USB port and report back.
BTW are you straight into your PC tower or are you using a USB Hub, as I have just fixed a problem for someone that was down to a cheap and nasty hub.

I don't switch my camera on until it is plugged in. Hope you soon get it working. Good luck.

I have unplugged a USB 2 hub and plugged the USB cable directly into one of the USB ports, in fact have tried all 4 ports, but it doesn't make any difference.

Also tried not powering on the camera, until is all plugged in, still doesn't work.

Tried the same on both USB ports on a laptop running Win XP Pro, same problem!

Tried running the Canon Untilities, Camera Window program, nothing happens, no dialog is displayed.

Thanks for any help

is the camera in preview mode when you plug it in to the computer?

You have to have the camer turned off, and in preview mode.

Plug it in, and turn it on.

My winXP pro then gives a little musical tone and I can access the camera through "My Computer".
Sometimes I have to refreash the camera window, but my XP install is on its way out and doing all sorts of other funny things.

If that dosn't work, and your not having any luck on another comp, its possible you have a faulty USB cable.

Thanks for your suggestions, I tried them but they didn't help. I feel you maybe right about the problem with the USB cable. Will take it back to the shop and see if they will change it.

Many Thanks

Managed to get the usb cable changed but still have the problem. I believe the problem maybe because Windows XP was not pre-installed on either system, which is why the system doesn't have the oem files for the Canon drivers. anyone know where I might get these? Tried installing the Twain drivers, but that doesn't work either.

Maybe I will just have to wait for Canon support to return from their xmas holidays.

Have you made sure that the camera is A) switched off when you connect to the usb port
and B) the little sliding switch is set to playback? Are you able to view your pics via your tv.

Miket5

A) Yes, B) Yes and yes I can view the pictures on my TV.

Most unusual.

It might be a problem wit the camera itself.
They are ment to be XP ready or something I think they call it, basicly the camera contains enough information that you don't have to install any drivers etc, just plug it in and it tells XP enough about itself that two get along like good mates.

The fact that zoombrowser is then giving you a no camera found message, and the fact thats it happened on two comps, and you've eliminated a faulty cable as the problem surports the idea the camera itself might be at fault.

Just for kicks, try going to the Canon website
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=320&modelid=10462 and downloading the WIA 6.2.5 Driver for Windows XP (under Windows Drivers) and then installing it (even if you already). Perhaps that will help.

Turn of the computer. Plug in the camera.
Turn on the computer. Turn on the camera.
Give it time to read new hardware.
See if that works.

Glad I read this posting. I have the SAME problem. Got an A85 for the holidays and XP, no matter what I do (thanks for the suggestions), will not recognize it. My final solution might be to just get a seperate memory card reader. They are pretty cheap nowadays.

Tried the camera on another computer running Windows 2000 yesterday with Twain drivers installed, still didn't work.

Phoned Canon Technical support helpline this morning, they suggested taking it back to the retailer and getting a replacement.
New camera works fine.

Thank you to everyone who made suggestions to ge the camera working, it seems the fault was in the camera.

... I have been struggling 2 hours before I found a wonderful post on another forum that recommended to check if the "still image service" was started.
grrr I disabled this service myself several months ago and the canon powershot a400 camera window application reported that it could not detect the camera

I started the service and then it worked great

Shame on canon support guys who did not help people on this

Shame on me for disabling this service and could not remember it.

Sahme on Canon programmers for not displaying and explicit error message. A "click here for details" button with explicit error mesage would have been great

see ya

Same problem with the A85 on XP- it was working okay a few days ago. But after reading the above I tried to find the still image service to activate it and can't find it - at least by right-clicking My Computer-management-services and applications-services. Could it have been erased?

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for this thread.
I had the same problem, tearing my hair out, because my other camera works no problem, so I also had to start the image service

Len
I'm on Windows 2000, but it should be the same for Win XP
Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools and under Services, there is Still Image Service
Right-click it and choose start

Hi guys.

I tried pretty much everything you suggested. Still not working.

I have "Windows Server 2003" on my computer. Can someone tell me wher to find this "Still Image Service" with Server 2003 to re-start it.

I have a second computer at home with "Windows 2000" and the camera works fine. So I can take out the faulty USB cable or the faulty camera.

I re-installed the WIA 6.2.5 Driver for Windows XP that "rsnadel" suggested. No go.

I tried updating the ZoomBrowserEX. No go.

What else can I try?????

Windows Server 2003 won't support workstation-type applications, like digital cameras. There are real differences between XP and Server 2003

I had the same problem using my IXUS 500 with XP. At first things work well, but after a while I keep having the message: NO CAMERA FOUND.

My solution is this:
- Connect your camera to your computer, having your camera TURNED ON!
- Go to 'device manager' in windows XP. (Start->Control Panel->Systems->[Tab] Hardware-- >Device manager)
- Find your canon camera in the list and delete it.
- Scan for hardware changes (right click inside the window)
- Now windows XP will reinstall driver for your Camera. It might ask you to specify the path for some files. The files are are ready on your harddisk. Search for it.
- Now your canon software will detect your camera!

Have fun! I hope it works for you all

Thank's "Yaowen"

It works!!!!!!.

Just like you said. I didn't have to look for any files. XP re-installed all the files by itself.

Finally.

Many thanks.
