View Full Version : Judging by what many G2 owners say...

I hear about G2's being sent back to Canon for repairs everywhere I go, especially at the http://www.dpreview.com forums where most people who own the camera had some problems with it.
Also, the talk about G2's "crack" that apears at the back of the camera because it was poorly constructed makes me think if this camera is as good as most reviews say?
I mean it's not a cheap camera, I paid well over 1,000 dollars (Canadian) for my G2 about 15 days ago and am starting to freak out by all the negative things I hear about it, from other users, and I still have some 15 more days to return it for a full refund. I am now honestly having second thoughts about this product.
Bottom line is this. For this much money, I think it's fair to expect the camera to last for YEARS and YEARS if kept in the case after use and if not abused. If it's not capable of surviving that long, and if chances are something will most likely go wrong within a year or two, then I really see no reason why NOT TO return it to the store and get my money back.
I am worried, I dont know what to do.

Calm down.
Forums attract people with problems. The G2 is very popular and as any mechanical device, problems are bound to develop in a certain percentage.
The crack thing is overblown. My G2 has it, but so far I have not felt compelled to send it in for warranty repair. It does not effect picture quality. Sure, it would be better if Canon had caught this before they shipped the product, but it happens.
Aside from the crack, my almost-year-old G2 is fine. I do take care of my camera, and I expect it will be OK for some time to come.
If your G2 is OK now, I'd advise you to stick with it and have fun. There's no way I can guarantee you won't have trouble down the road, but I don't think that can be said for any camera.

How big is the crack on your G2? Mine doesnt have it, YET.
I was told at another board that only early models of G2 have the crack problem, and that after Canon realized the problem, they fixed it on later models, so If I am lucky, the one I bought is a later model with no crack danger.

It's actually a chip. I had not noticed it at all until I went looking for it. As I said, it doesn't affect the camera other than appearance.

Don't know about that. All I know equipment will eventually get dinged no matter how you care for it. The now-infamous G2 crack is clearly a manufacturing defect and it is covered by the warranty.

Braveheart,
As ega1 said, these forums tend to attract a vocal minority who may or may not have a legitimate gripe. This forum is refreshingly free of that problem, so I read it everyday. dpreview unfortunately suffers from a number of people who have owned the camera for 2 days, didn't like it for whatever reason and returned it(perhaps legitimately), but take it apon themselves to post incessantly about it. I can only sanely handle visiting that forum every few days or I tend to become very cynical indeed (advocating the G2 to deaf ears becomes tiresome). :)
Anyway, in regards to your question, I personally have a tiny tiny hairline crack that is more than stable, and I've learnt to overcome AF shortcomings. Now, unlike the naysayers, I actually get to enjoy taking photos. You have a warranty (right?), so don't worry unless something really goes wrong.
Oh yeah, be very careful about what you read on forums. There are rumours, theories and outright lies amongst the good stuff.
Happy snapping :)

Well, when I purchased the camera, I didnt pay for any warranty, and I am not sure what warranty comes with the camera without paying anything extra.
However, they did offer me some warranty at the store, but it cost too much so I passed. I still have around 15 days to either return it for a refund or exchange for another one, if this one happens to malfunction.

Canon's warranty for the G2 in the US is one year from the date of purchase. Best Buy, Circuit City and others offer extended warranties.
I did have a problem with my G2 and that is how I found this forum. When I bought my 420EX flash, it did not seem to work right. I searched through this and one other forum and found this problem was not unique to me. Basically, the leads inside the hot shoe needed to be re-soldered.
I then called the tech support line and the technician seemed to agree with me that something was wrong with the wiring inside the camera. I sent my camera, flash, and a copy of the receipt for the camera, in for service along with a detailed letter explaining what the symptoms were and what I thought the problem was.
I had to pay shipping to get the camera to Illinois but Canon paid for the FED-EX 2 day air return and I had my fixed camera and flash back in less than two weeks with no other charges incurred.
This is only a guess, but for every person you see posting in a forum, ther may be ten more people who don't post and most of them probably don't have any problems.
My father bought his G2 first and was influential in our [my wife and my] decision to buy ours. He has not had any problems with his to date.

That's good to know, I probably have the same one year warranty that comes with the camera, good thing I didnt pay anything for extended warranty, they wanted to charge me over 100 dollars (Canadian) for one extra year, and even more for two or three years of warranty, it was too much money, considering I spent so much on the camera itself plus the 256 memory card which I got for HALF the regular price by the way.

dude.......
DONT PANIC.........the G2 is a wicked camera.....ive been usin it for a year and am now gettin the d60......havin used professional digital backs, in comparison the quality is definitely the best for the price...and still one year on........its only downfall is it isnt an SLR so it will piss you off eventually through creative limitations...hence im gettin the d60.......(digital images are best with loads of lite...excellent with an external flash)
after 5 months mine cracked [you can check the serial no - ithink something to do with the 5th digit- youll findd it in this forum or dpreview forum]....told cano, no problem send it back... sent it back just before the warranty expired....they fixed that, so a new shell, a scratch on the lcd + adjusted for a couple of hotpixels....and only 7day wait.....now it sparkles, so can sell it and get the pwrsht 45s when its out.....
peace....ian
