A few more water polo shots from this weekend. This time I worked in manual mode. I was working with a 70-300mm zoom, so to keep speed up high, I worked with 400 ISO. Pictures were shot at 1/500 to freeze action. I opened up the lens to f/11 which I found to work nicely. As always C and C welcome. These are the pictures I feel give a sense of the action. I have the rest on www.flickr.com/photos/menlo_water_polo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/menlo_water_polo)

These are very nice, especially numbers 3 and 4. I wish you went a little higher on the shutter speed (maybe by going to 800 ISO).

Thanks superdiver

Thank you. I think you might be right. A little bit better stop action might have helped. I would not have had to go to 800 ISO, I could have opened up another stop.

Love # 1, great expression on the player. Thanks for sharing!

Isnt that a great expression? She blocked the shot in a great play.

Thank you. Your inputs on the previous post helped.

I was assuming you wanted the same DOF (which worked out well).

Love the shots. I'm surprised you were able to stop the action with the 70-300. Fantastic work. Was this college or professional. I'm sure they'd love to have/buy some of those images for promotional work. Nice job!

This is an adult league, and they were playing at a national level tournament. My daughter is on the team, and she asked me to take the pictures. At the meet, the US mens Olympic team played against the Austrian mens Olympic team. I did not get to see that scrimmage, although I did take a picture of one of the US team members going through some professional portraits in the water.

I am waiting to see the requests to buy some of the pictures. I suspected that there will be some request, but so far nothing.

As to the technical aspects - stopping the action is a function of shutter speed. The 70-300 is a great lens, and the IS helps a great deal. Of course, its biggest problem is that it is a relatively slow lens. It was a bright day, I had no problem with ISO 400 getting fast enough to stop action. The interesting part (for me at least) was switching to manual exposure in order to have more control over the sun/shadow exposure issues. I was very pleased with how that turned out.
