Here is what Rob did because forum members there failed to follow his rules. Some folks think our moderators are tough, ha. Here is tough!!
I do hope Rob kicks a few off the forum and gets back to normal soon.

Thanks for dropping by the Rob Galbraith Digital Photography Insights forums, and season's greetings! These forums will be closed until 8 AM MT on Tuesday, December 28, 2004. We've had to take this step because we're currently unable to keep up with a huge surge in forum rule busting posts during the holiday season, the number of which has peaked in the last several days for some reason. So that this behaviour doesn't continue, and we can enjoy some downtime with our families, we saw this as our only option. Thanks to the thousands of visitors who understand that these forums are designed to be a resource where photographers can help other photographers shoot, import, select, edit, print and distribute digital photographs better. Your contributions here are appreciated, as is your understanding during the forums' two-day cooling off period. For those that seem determined to harm the resource we're trying to provide serious and professional photographers, please spend your online hours somewhere else. -Rob Galbraith

Yeah, I saw that. AAMOF, I was going to post a similar post like yours to see if anybody knew what was going on there. As usual, I'm always clueless to these "exciting" going-ons in the forums. Anybody know what all the ruckus is about over there? ???

Thats pretty extreme, I would love to know the exact details behind what caused the site to be shut down for a few days.

Iv been involved in moderating forums for over 4 years now, and Iv never seen anything get that bad.
Even if only one moderator is online you can ban a username and move or delete offensive or unwanted threads and posts faster than an annoying person can make them.

The only time I can see a need to shut down a forum is if there are no mods or admin avliable, possible on a smaller forum, especialy at this time of year, or there is work being done on the server etc.

If there was an upriseing of members who didn't like the way things were run then the site admin need to look at whats happening and find out why, although I doubt this is the case. While Iv seen many attempts at such things, they are only ever the result of one or two misguided members, and are easily sorted out.
If they are being mass spammed by a group of idiots intent on causing distrubtion then shutting the forums down will do little to stop them, they will be back when the forum re-opens.
Instead obtaining some I.Ps and contacting the ISP can have some quite impressive results.
I know of several people who have had ISP accounts suspended, or stopped altogether, and one person who faced military discipline after spamming a forum, and having his i.p traced.

Its always sad to hear about such things, and its very frustrating having to deal with them, but dealing with them is an unforunate part of running any internet forum.
I can only see shutting one down as a last resort.

I think this is funny also. I thought the only "cooling off period" pertained to buying guns.
