You need to update your Adobe Camera Raw plug-in the version 4.4.1, which is the latest version: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Make sure to follow the installation instructions exactly.

Or use Canon's supplied disc for RAW conversion then do the rest in PS.

Thanks for the info. canon's DPP 3.4 works great.

As 'TheConvict' said, you nee to update the ACR plugin to at least 4.1 I believe, the latest version is 4.4.1 I'd just get that personally.
Canon's DPP is very good though, but some people don't like the interface (me included).

OR simply open your canon RAW files via Bridge (preview- ftw). Ta-da!

I'd like to hear how you think this will help. Sure RAW files have a JPG preview, but if Bridge doesn't understand the RAW format how's it going to extract it?

No need to be snarky, guy.
I thought because I own a 40d, my job has no RAW processing software, and only 3 copies of CS3, but has upgraded all CS2 and CS3, and because I've seen the exact same error mentioned by the OP that I would recommend the exact same method we use to handle my RAW files.
PS will recognize the RAW, and tag it, but won't open them unless you do the above.
Sorry, perhaps I should preface my responses with a lengthy discussion of my credentials/experience in a given area prior to responding?

The original poster clearly stated that he has Photoshop CS3 with the Camera Raw 4.0 plug-in. That version of the plug-in was the one shipped with the software and does not support RAW files created by a 40D. No amount of trying to open the files in Bridge will make them visible; he first needs to get an updated version of the plug-in that includes support for the 40D since support was only added in September 2007 with the release of ACR version 4.2.
Obviously someone at your job to the time to update your versions of the plug-in or you wouldn't have been able to view RAW files either.
No need to be snarky, guy.

I was asking how your suggestion would help, and you still haven't said. How do you expect bridge to read RAW files when ACR in Photoshop can't?

As you wish.
Er, let me now over-qualify my statements: I still haven't upgraded my CameraRaw. it is still 4.0. I use CS3. I own a 40d.
I also use Lightroom, and export to PS3. My Lightroom is upgraded fully.
...yet CameraRaw is still 4.0 dated 2007.
So, to recap: I really *do* know what I'm talking about here. 40d+same version CameraRaw+same error message.
This forum certainly is filled with unfriendly (and conversely- unHELPful people)

The forum is generally filled with friendly, helpful people, we just don't know quite how your suggestion will work or help the OP.

This is old. You're trolling. You win. I have no idea what I'm speaking of. Sorry to make a suggestion (which works for me, strangely, with the exact same situation as the OP).

No i'm quite serious, I don't know how you can view 40D files with ACR 4.0. You've come in here and told us you're wonderful and have a great solution, but haven't backed it up with substance or fact. This is probably why you feel you're not getting a great reception. Knowledgeable, friendly people are welcomed onto POTN, people who are all talk not so much.
I would really like to hear how you view 40D files with ACR 4.0.

He wants to know the "how" when I'm not even sure, but ignores that I'm in the exact situation as the OP, still pressing a moot point: Trolling.
I was never looking for a fight, but lord on high, offering a suggestion which worked for me (again, in the same situation) has proven futile.
Why try anything new/different/out-of-the-box when others tell us it's pointless? Hmmm.
Ok ok I'm done here, but I leave with this: Tell me how I can do what I do, which the OP wants to do, but everyone denies is possible, yet is unwilling to attempt themselves? Spade a spade, or kettle- black?

Never said I was wonderful.
I explained, now breathlessly, that I have CS3 with CR 4.0 un-upgraded. I do have Lightroom, however, but that doesn't change PS. I've explained what I do here at home (or did prior to Lightroom), and what I still do at my work.
What more do you want? I offered a suggestion. I said I was in the same situation. Would you like my CS3 registration data to confirm all of this? Then you insult me saying I'm all talk when all I did was ask the OP to try using Bridge, as it worked for me both on my machine at home, and on un-upgraded systems with CS2 and CS3 at work.
Please, please, good sir, I implore you to read, possibly re-read, with less snarky-eyes. Your first response was hot, and I feel every response since then has been less warm (obviously). There has been nothing more I could have done to prove to you/the world, my suggestion. It works for me, it works.

Does anyone have any idea why Meesterjojo can use ACR 4.0 to view 40D files in Bridge when 40D support was added in ACR 4.1? Could it have something to do with Lightroom being on the machine? I'm curious now.

You think i'm trolling? Interesting. I'm known for bluntness here, but trolling not so much - though occasionally I play devils advocate. In this case I really am curious how it's working for you, given I don't see how it could work, unless LR is involved. Usually the person with 11 posts making unsubstantiated claims would be more likely to be called a troll than the person with 25000+ posts asking "how does that work"?

so if you're using LR and then opening into PS, you're doing so using TIFFs not RAW files, hence your ACR does not need upgrading, the OP never mentioned LR, therefore for the sake of a free download you want him to go out and spend £200/$400 on software??
so I don't see that you offered the solution the OP requested.
Then you have a go at Tim, who, yes is blunt, but helpful none the less. you still can't open RAW files through ACR. thats all he said.

Hmmm...unless I missed the part where the original poster said he had a copy of Lightroom 1.4.1 (the latest version) then you're not in the same situation as he/she is.
Look, neither ACR version 4.0 nor 4.1 will open RAW files from a 40D. In fact even version 4.2 only has limited support since it can't handle sRAW files.
As you wish.
