I am trying to decide what camera to give my daughter for her high school graduation. I want to give it to her on the 26th of June at her Sr. Awards night since she is getting an award. Any suggestions? I have a Rebel XT but she has only shown interest in a point and shoot that I have.
Thanks

What's the point and shoot that you have? Does she really want a camera or is that your suggestion? If she's really interested in getting one, you may want to look at a more feature-rich model than if she's not averse to, but not wildly enthusiastic about, getting one.

I will have to look at the model at home, I haven't used it once since I got my DSLR. She hasn't asked for one but she grabs mine old one all the time. She is going away to college and her sister and brother will be ticked if she takes the point and shoot away with her. She will be down near Olean NY.
P.S. It is not her only grad gift.

Without knowing what she's using, I can suggest:
Simple, not a lot of control - an SD model; SD870 IS has a relatively wide angle (about the same as your 18-55 at the wide end); SD1100 IS which isn't as wide, but runs around $50 (MSRP) less, or the SD950, top-of-the-line SD.
Some control; shutter speed and aperture camn be set, Tv, Av, P and M available - A720 IS (smaller) or A650 IS
High-end, but bigger - S5 IS (large zoom range, bulkiest of the lot) or G9 IS (more MP, and can shoot RAW as well as JPEG).

Ok, I'm at home and have the camera in hand. The point and shoot that she has been borrowing is a Concord 6340z 6.0 Megapixels 12x total zoom with metal housing. I was thinking of a canon one for her. I know she likes the video option this camera has.

I'd go Canon SD1000, Canon S5 IS or Canon G9 for her. Depending upon the size she'd prefer, of course.

Sounds like it's fairly close to the A720 in specifications. If you want to give her a little more, maybe look at the A650 or the SX100. The S5 may be too bulky for her.

SD1100IS (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduc t%2FB0012Y6958%2Fsr%3D8-7%2Fqid%3D1213194494%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Delectronics %26qid%3D1213194494%26sr%3D8-7&tag=canon%5Fforum-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) stylish & great functions.
And it comes in pink! Sorry, I just assume all girls like the color pink...
I just bought the SD1000, the predecessor to the SD1100, and I love it. It really takes great pics for a small camera, but is small enough to take everywhere. I read that the SD1100 is a little slower in shooting, but adds IS, more color choices, etc. You can't go wrong w/ either!

Thanks.
She loved pink growing up but now it's taboo. Purple is the new color today. :)
