This is the Atherstone Hunt getting ready do depart from Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. The recent government legislation will make hunting with dogs illegal throughout the United Kingdom. The law should come into effect on February 18th, however this will be delayed to allow for appeal.

Won't get into the politics of hunting, however really, really great shots.
No 2 is sensational. As for 3 & 4, drunk in charge of a horse ? -12 month ban.

Why don't you say what you really think?
There are many barbaric activities that have survived through the centuries, and they are gradually fading away mainly due to irrelevance. One that survives and really bothers me is bullfighting. Another is dog fighting. I'm sure the typical participant in a fox hunt really doesn't consider the poor fox. It's the glorious tradition of dashing around through the countrysides yelling 'Tally ho,' or whatever it is they do.
Great pictures. There are so many paradoxes in them. Nos. 2 & 4 really stand out for me.

Regardless of how you get there or your reasons for it, the end result is a dead animal A animal that was killed for tradition or sport.
If an animal does not die or hunting is not for sport or tradition then please correct me.

This isnt the place for such an argument, either way. As I said nice photos. Agreed. I'm afraid I didn't set a very good example myself earlier in this thread, but the thing we have to keep in mind is that we all have opinions about such things, and there really isn't any harm in expressing them. On the other hand, we have to respect each other's right to do the same thing without attacking them for expressing their own beliefs. There is no benefit in trying to engage them in debate. We all believe what we believe, and if nothing else, have learned through experience that in such discussions, no minds will ever be changed.
Again, these are nice shots. Let's confine our discussion to them.
Thanks, everyone. My apologies to the originator of this thread.

Very nice shots, you really captured the essence of the moment.
My heart goes out to the hounds, they are the party that suffer the most as a result of hunting. The first shot really shows their expressions well.

Not required, but gratefully received. :o
I deliberately stayed totally neutral in my comments as I know from the debate that has been raging in the UK for the past few years that there is no argument, on either side, that will sway opinion or make anyone change their views.
Interestingly, this hunt never took place as the ground was too hard, so after a swift canter around the village, they all went home.

One with the photos and comments to those.
And one for discussion about the subject itself.

Congratulations on a set of pictures that evoked such strong emotional reactions from the viewers. That's what a photographer wants isn't it? Without saying a word or taking a position you created a debate. These pictures can be viewed as a celebration of an old tradition, or the documentation of a sort of arrogance and cruelty draped in the trimmings of wealth and privelige.
I believe it would be a mistake to split off the comments from the pictures as some have suggested. This is the essence of photography.
Hats off to you!

Neil, These are all very good. I especially like #1 for showing the excitement of the dogs, horses, and riders as a unit.
I liked #2 for showing the traditional "side saddle" riding position, as well as riding apparel for the woman. You just dont see this very often anymore.
Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos.:)

Scott, you hit the nail right on it's head, if you look at the history of Photography you will find the same sort of comments about Nude Photography, Photography verses Art, etc etc.
Neil, as for the shots they are great, you have captured the moment be it for (as Scott states) celebration or documentation. Well done on the idea and you're creative ability.

Why do you keep calling it "Boxing" every time I see that i think it's real boxing and click on the link.
I take no credit for the following information, but here goes:-
Boxing Day originated in England in the middle of the nineteenth century under Queen Victoria. December 26th, or Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other Commonwealth countries. It is spent with family and friends at open gatherings with lots of food, fun, friendship and love. Boxing Day is so called because it was the custom on that day for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes or gifts in return for good and reliable service throughout the year. Boxing Day is also St. Stephen's Day. St Stephen was a little known saint who achieved eternal fame by being the first Christian to be martyred for his faith by being stoned to death shortly after Christ's crucifixion.
The traditional celebration of Boxing Day included giving money and other gifts to charitable institutions, needy individuals, and people in service jobs. The holiday may date from the Middle Ages (A.D. 400's--1500's), but the exact origin is unknown. It may have begun with the lords and ladies of England, who presented Christmas gifts in boxes to their servants on December 26. Or it may have begun with priests, who opened the church's alms (charity) boxes on the day after Christmas and distributed the contents to the poor.
Some say the tradition stems from Roman times when money to pay for athletic games was collected in boxes. Amongst the ruins of Pompeii, boxes made out of earthenware with slits in the top full of coins have been found. Later the Romans brought the idea of collecting boxes to Britain, and monks and clergy soon used similar boxes to collect money for the poor at Christmas. On the day after Christmas, the priests used to open the boxes and distribute the contents to the poor of the village. Thus this day came to be called Boxing Day.
While government buildings and small businesses are closed, the malls are filled with people either exchanging gifts or buying reduced priced Christmas gifts, cards, and decorations. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing day is classed as the Christmas Season with Boxing day falling on the following Monday if December 26th falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
Hope this helps :D
