NYC locals; give me your gems!

I'm headed back to the big apple next week.
I spent quite a few summers back there and a bunch of holiday trips as well.

I've already done the touristy things.. Now aside from going to Yankee stadium to see the Padres play the Yankees; I'm looking for 'different' things to do.

Do you have a favorite place for a slice?
A favorite beer bar?
That awesome location for a picture at sunrise or sunset?
Stained glass in a church?

Please; give me your tidbits! I'm on the hunt for something other than Nathans and Papaya for a hot dog, a good pizza place that doesn't have Rays in the name... You get the point.

Cross the Hudson and enjoy the NYC skyline from Jersey.

What about just walking around downtown, etc...and do some street photography?

I agree with Nick.....

Don't get down to the city much, so can't recommend any eateries, but as far as any type of non-touristy stuff, walk around Times Square, Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, Greenwich Village, Tribeca, Midtown Manhattan.....

Liberty State Park is a nice venue to shoot the city from.....just south of Newark....

Hoboken/Jersey City is also good for skyline shots from the Jersey side....

what i would suggest is SOHO, battery park, west village .. basically around those areas are pretty cool .. and within those areas, there are tons of eateries and bars since it is a NYU crowd

as for pizzerias .. there are just way too many to name or pick one .. but while you're down there .. just walk around and check out the spots and see how many poor college students are in there ( they're broke, but will not sacrifice a good slice )

and also .. while you're here .. you have to try a " falafels " on St. Mark Street ( east village ) its great and cheap and it'll make you fart all night long lol ..

Almost any neighborhood in Manhattan offers lots of opportunities if you focus in the details, those little things ignored by most tourists. NOHO, SOHO, Tribeca, Chinatown (East Broadway area, not Canal St), Upper West Side, Chelsea, Financial District, Lower East Side, they are all great. For something different to Manhattan, I'd suggest: Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, Conney Island in Brooklyn, or Astoria in Queens. Of course not all of these places are as safe as Manhattan... better to go with company.
