Shot of the moon from tonight (10th June.) 40D with 100-400 maxed at 100mm, 1/40 second, F6.3, ISO 100 & Raw. This is a 100% crop no sharpening or other work done in photoshop.
Given that when I zoomed in using live view I could see the moon's surface shimmering due to atmospherics, I am really pleased with how sharp this is.

Nice pic... it's got loads of clarity for the zoom and crop.

I presume you meant "maxed at 400mm". Nice shot. Just a little overexposed on the right edge of the Moon, but well exposed near the terminator. Nice and sharp too. I would have used an exposure of something like 1/100 seconds at f/6.3 and ISO 100 which might have solved that overexposure.....

Hey all! I just noticed how many people have been kind enough to reply to this thread.
Coondogg, if that was taken with your 55-250 IS I actually think that is pretty good! (You should have seen my first attempt last year with a Tamron 55-200 when I first started getting into photography )
jscotti, yes I did mean maxed at 400mm (doh!) and I appreciate your comments about the exposure. I shot in 'm' mode and tried a few different apeture / shutter combinations but did not think to try some exposure variations, or try metering off centre - one to remember for next time!
I have had a play in Photoshop to try and cool the original down a bit, not sure if I like it better or not. Adjusted curves, burn tool, sponge tool and a touch of USM. Any C&C apprecited!

Just for good measure, here is one I took a couple of hours earlier in the daylight, sharpened a bit and increased contrast in photoshop; F5.6 1/320 ISO 100

I like the new night-time version. Not sure the color is right - I don't think I've ever quite seen that strong a brown color, but it does show the variation of the different Mare surfaces very nicely. You can even see the dark Mare surface that goes into the Taurus-Littrow valley where Apollo 17 landed on the southeast edge of Mare Serenitatis! I love pictures like this - it really makes me want to go visit the place!
