This is a first attempt so some critque and sum tips for next time please

In my limited experience i would say those are too wide. Try shooting in portrait and find a good spot on the road, look for a bend to give the trails a point to emerge from or end at. Location is the key and plenty of cars!!
Using a small aperture of f11 or smaller and a low ISO gives the best results IMHO.
Did you use a tripod?

ok thanks for that i shall venture further afield to fine a high place above a motorway neer a bend

the one i looked at was out of focus. put it on manual focus and set to a tick closer than infinity, shoot at a small aperture (f/8 f/11) to get some dof.
